Ask a question to the user above you!

Posted 5 years, 11 months ago (Edited 5 months, 7 days ago) by hedgemaze

We have lots of threads to ask questions to or about characters, but what about the users? In the vein of the Say something to the TH user above you! thread and the I want to see a TH user who... thread (and serving basically as a non-anonymous CuriousCat), this is a thread to help you get to know your fellow TH users better by asking the person above you a question. In return, the person below you will pose a question to you. After you're asked a question, edit your post with your answer!

If you're uncomfortable or don't want to answer the question you were given for any reason, just say so and leave a fun fact about yourself so the game still serves its purpose. If a question is truly problematic, message me with any concerns.

Rules:

  • Don't ask questions that are very personal or could be uncomfortable, and bear in mind that many TH users are minors, so while I encourage you to look at the profile of the user above you and ask about something mentioned if you like (like their pets, their hobbies, or their current project), please don't ask very personal questions like exactly where someone lives.
  • Try to ask something fun or interesting, but it's fine if you don't know the person above you at all-- getting to know each other better is the point of this thread! It's fine to ask something general like what their hobbies are, who their favorite fictional character is, how they came up with their username, which of their own characters is their favorite, or how they found ToyHouse.
  • Of course, it's great if you ask something more specific, too! If you know they have a lot of fandom characters, you might ask how they got into that fandom, or if they have a unique art style, you might ask how they developed it!
  • There's another thread for specific questions about characters, and another for worlds, but you can ask general/broader questions about a person's creations here, like how long they've been working on their story, or what inspires or influences them. I'm not going to keep writing examples, but you get the idea. Just use common sense and try to get to know your fellow TH users better!
  • You can ask multiple questions in your comment if you want to, but only one is fine, too. This can be as in-depth or as casual as you like.
  • Please ping the person above you so you make sure that they see your question! If you're not sure how to do this, you simply type @THEIRUSERNAME, and they will be notified! This will not work if you edit the ping into your comment later (like if you wanted to claim and then edit your question in); you must put it in when you first submit the comment.
  • You are NOT ALLOWED to skip anyone in this thread. If you cannot see the post above you because the poster or you have blocked each other, wait for another person to comment before replying to the thread. Feel free to bump the thread to encourage others to participate!
  • Wait at least a couple of posts before going again.
  • Edit your original comment with your answer to keep this clear; please DO NOT add new comments to the thread just to answer someone's question. This gets confusing. Take it to private messages if you want to have an ongoing conversation.
  • You can bump the thread as often as you like; I don't mind.
  • Be nice and have fun!   Please don't be rude if someone asks you a question you've already answered before! If that happens, you may link your previous response if you don't want to go over it again, but I recommend adding something new to say about the topic, if you can!
  • Want to play the game in reverse? Answer a question from the user above!

The first person can either ask me something or just claim a spot!

Edit: my answer

"Hedgemaze Expo" is the name of the main characters' band in my comic! I've been using either HedgemazeExpo or Hedgemaze as a username ever since, which is to say since 2003! Most people just call me Hej for short now.

The name itself doesn't mean much of anything, other than that I liked both words and liked the sort of paradoxical nature of an exposition dedicated to huge structures that can't be moved (what do they exhibit, photos? bush samples? tiny mazes?). In terms of the comic, it's just supposed to be a unique, kind of awkward, and silly band name, because in-story, it's an inside joke between my characters Jill and Amber.

I just wanted to ask you, since I've been seeing you around in the forums, but how have you shifted focus regarding characters and/or their designs? Have you ever made worlds for your characters? If so, then would you be able to write a story for these worlds? And, lastly, I've known that your icon is of a character from Zelda, but how have you gotten into the series itself?

Character-wise, I really like Spike! He's a pretty interesting character, and he's really chill imo. Episode-wise, Episode 24 is my favorite, because...

... It's really emotional, and the bit where Ed left the gang together with Ein is pretty sad too. Also, Faye finding the location of her home (which unfortunately doesn't exist anymore, since apparently it got destroyed when she was frozen for 52 years) kinda felt very sad as well.

Also, about the live action adaptation, I'm kinda mixed about it? I'm kinda scared that it would probably ruin what made Cowboy Bebop a really good anime in general.

Hey, I've never had a reason to talk to you about it before, but I love Cowboy Bebop too! Who's your favorite character, and/or what's a favorite episode or moment for you?

And what do you think about the live action remake they're doing? I'm... dreading it, but I hope it's alright.

What originally made you decide to create Catband? I know it's a project you've been working on for a long time, so I was curious about how it got started in the first place.

This is kind of a tricky question to answer, because the project developed into what it is over time, so this isn't going to be the neatest answer.

For a timeline: a lot of the characters are older and were originally unrelated (I combined them into this later), but from 2001-2003 I created Amber, Jill, and their friends, and I wrote a prose story called Life in Paradise about them. There was no band competition yet, not even any bands (though Amber and Jill were musical), but the general story of that is still the base of Catband now, a story about Amber and Jill's friendship. In 2004 I had to write a fictional introductory speech for speech class in school, so I made up a band for them, Hedgemaze Expo, and wrote a speech about Jill as if she were a famous rock star. That was the same year I created Roadie, and I drew a lot of him and his friend Silver and other musicians, and I was really interested in what the story and setting would be with all these musicians, so I decided to write a comic about them. And this was when American Idol was big, so I had the idea to make it a battle of the bands competition, like a parody of Idol, and maybe an origin story for these bands. It developed from there, but that's the start.

Thanks for the question!

Out of the stories you have written and linked on your profile page, which one is your favourite and why?

My favourite is the Hunters series! It's a kinda open-ended, connected series of short stories and oneshots (I've yet to write anything longer with it) focusing on a tiny organisation of vampire slayers trying to protect the UK from vampires. Because they live in a modern-day setting, most people don't know or believe that vampires exist, so they have to work in secrecy. The main character cast has existed since September 2015 and I've gotten very attached to them, doing numerous private RPs with them and developed their backstories and personalities probably more than all my other characters, with a few exceptions. So it's the cast of Hunters that makes me love it so much (not the plot, which as of now is virtually nonexistent...).

Which story are you most proud of?

The ones I'm proudest of (at the moment) are The Cursed Prince and Vincent. TCP began in early 2015, so it's an old story, but I still think it's one of the most interesting things I've written, from my perspective anyway. Vincent was written last year. It was an idea that I hadn't really done before, and coupled with the fact that I wrote the entire story in a weekend... I think Vincent is the one I'm proudest of right now.

Out of your story OCs who is your favourite and why?

The Hunters cast! I also like the cat characters in Vincent, and some of the cast of The Alpha's Son (though I can't talk about them too much).

I'm going to be somewhat cryptic so I don't say EXACTLY where I live. There are a handful of desserts where I live, but the biggest one is the Great Basin Desert. I live here because I was born here. Not a lot of choice in that matter, but I honestly enjoy it since this state does have some cool wild areas. Plus, local history really has fed into my huge interest in cowboys and the wild west (I also just learned there is a famous grave now by and I really want to go see it).

To make up for being cryptic, here's a photo I took of a cactus.

As for my art style, for a long time, it somewhat reflected whatever show I was a fan of. Eventually, I wound up just working on anatomy and winding up with a semi-realistic art style.

Alexg47

TenMomentsTill You say you're living in the desert, but which one and why? Also *insert generic question about how you developed your art style here*.

"You seem to have made characters for the periodic table; that's a neat idea, are you planning to write for it or make a world?" I'm... not 100% sure what you mean by that, but I have written things for it, and there is world building, you don't want to see that though, it's really really bad.

"I see you're also making characters for countries, same question there, are you planning to write for it?" Not as much as PA, like I said in its folder it's just a side project.

"Which OC is your favorite out of all of them?" Aluminum of course, she's the "kind of not really" main character.

Alphanix I actually have a couple of questions, if you don't mind!

  • What was it like to self-publish a work? Did you distribute physical copies or was it digital only?
  • What is the process of being officially published like? I at the very least assume you're not a Finn like I am so I'm very interested how this works elsewhere!
  • Since you do both writing and music, do you ever feel conflicted on which one you should focus more on? Or do you find it bothersome if people refer to you simply as a writer or a musician without acknowledging the other?

It's not odd dw!! But the thing is I don't think Europeans really have much in common aside from the fact they're Europeans! For example the culture in France is vastly different from Finland often to the point they're total opposites, and when I went there I was really surprised how everything from the food to the social rules of buses and sitting there were totally different from Finland haha.

So I think my number one Europe tip is to just embrace the new culture, because chances are it's vastly different from yours even if you were European yourself!

fairytype

Caine hi there, sorry about the potentially odd question! i see you're from finland. i JUST moved to france from the US. if you had to tell any one newcomer to europe one thing, what would it be?

--------------

i adore pokemon, i've been a fan since the beginning and i haven't missed a single main series game! my favorite pokemon is actually furret, but as a whole fairy types are my favorite type. you can't beat how cute they look! i've never thought of my love for pokemon influencing my designs, but i can see it slowly seeping through now that i'm starting to design ferals.

moving to france was sort of coincidence in the end! i got married to my french husband in december. we originally were thinking on having him immigrate to the US because he was more interested in the job market there, but a few factors made us change our minds for me to do the other way around, including: the process of immigration being a LOT easier, me gaining more moving than he would if we were to stay, my crappy living situation with my blood relatives, my need to get more affordable insurance since i'm physically disabled, and also the absurd cost of living in hawaii. while i'm a huge art and cuisine hoe and the culture of france definitely accomodates to that, it just so happened that france is where home is!

fairytype Judging by your username and profile, you like Pokémon am I right? Which game and which Pokémon are your favourites? (I'm assuming it's a fairy type haha, but which one?) Did your love Pokémon ever influence your characters and their designs?

Unrelated, but since you said you moved to France... Why did you do so? Do you like something special about the country? (Also if you have any questions about it feel free to ask me lmaooo)

Well I was just a basic weeb in middle school so everything started here ftgyhu- I'm not really into anime and manga anymore but my interest in the language stayed somehow?? Also even if I'm not longer into anime I still follow some Japanese artists' work so yea it's still useful stuff

My fave games... hmm, they're mostly Nintendo games, especially Animal Crossing and The Legend of Zelda (Link's Awakening is my fave from the series and htrgtgr I'm so happy about the latest Nintendo Direct)! They're probably the franchises I own the most merch off haha. I also really like Pokémon if that counts, and Mario Kart is super fun. I also looooove the universe of Mother/Earthbound but I haven't played the games much :0 I'm also super into Touhou Project, and some indies like The Binding of Isaac, Cave Story, Undertale/Deltarune, etc

I don't think I have a particular favourite Nintendo console? The DS and the 3DS are probably the ones I've played with the most, so I'd say that, but tbh I really like the aesthetics of GameBoy and GBA games (I hate playing on my original GB tho because I can't see anything??)... But yeah overall I prefer portable consoles!!

windhoundz what's your first language and which character is your personal favorite? uno more thing, what was it like learning english?

What got me interested in learning Russian? For some reason, I was really freaking interested in the Russian Revolution and the rise of communism in Russia. I guess it was a phase, you know. I started listening to Russian music for le memz, but these songs were actually quite lit. My interest grew a bit more, and hey, I passed the first part of Russian on Duolingo!

The most difficult part in Russian are those damned cases. Why are there 6 of them?! English only has 2 cases (and we barely even use the second one, so in all honesty, one case), so it's really hard for me to understand and grasp my mind around the other cases. The only issue with Duolingo is that it doesn't really provide a lesson type format (it just kinda makes you learn phrases and the words), so I have to learn that on my own. And I'm a better auditory/hands-on learner than I am a visual learner, so reading up on the cases still confuses the heck out of me. If I watch videos on my own time, I'll probably get it eventually as well as reading the lessons as I can sorta grasp the concept.

My favorite Cyrillic Alphabet...? The question is a bit unclear to me, so I'll just answer two and hope I answer your question. My favorite language that uses the Cyrillic alphabet would probably be Russian because I kinda don't care to learn the other ones- yet, at least. Not to mention, I'm not really educated on the languages that use it. My favorite letter in the alphabet is X because it just sounds cool.

Anyways, I hope I answered your questions adequately.

Hi, I saw you wrote that you want to learn Russian language! (waves from a fellow Russian learner but I'm stuck at the cases xD)

What got you interested to learn Russian? Which part do you consider the most difficult that you've encountered until now? And do you have any favorite Russian Cyrillic alphabet?

(To the person below me, I've been asked 'why I'm interested in Slavic country/culture/history'maybe four or five times already. Please refrain from repeating that question if possible. You're welcome to ask questions regarding that interest but let's try something more specific? Thank you)

Wow, a fellow former Kancolle player!! :D Thank you very much for your questions and yep, those are great!

Actually, while my username is indeed related to ships, it’s just the generic Russian word for an icebreaker which is mostly civilian vessels (or at least the one I like and use as my icon c:).

As for my favorite warships, I have to say mostly I’m more interested in modern warships (which is why I left Kancolle and started on my own project). My favorite modern warship is Russian guided-missiles cruiser Varyag, which is the flagship of Russian Pacific Fleet based in Vladivostok. Since she’s a modern warship, that means she doesn’t particularly have battle records (and I honestly wish she would never join any battle in future), what I like about this ship is how she was designed. For those in Kancolle, I like how ‘unique’ Italian cruiser Pola went down in history. :’D Personally I’m not keen to like ships based on battle records but more from interesting tidbits during their service life.

Regarding the astrology question, I prefer the aspect about personality based on zodiac signs but never 100% believe in them. And for the future prediction aspect is something I don’t believe at all. Mainly I find them interesting as a tool to help me create a personality for my OCs, especially the natal/birth chart using specific date/month/year and location of the birthplace - through using this, even the OCs with the same sun sign can be vastly different.

Kogami

Ledokol Hi! I hope this is more "specific" like what you wanted but I think you've mentioned about liking warships before? (That, and your username is based off one?) Aside from the one in your username, do you have any specifically favourite warship (for any reasons like it's history or war records, etc) This is coming from a former Kancolle player that does have some knowledge on them so I'm mostly curious lol

If that has been asked before, since you're interested in astrology--when it comes to horoscope, do you truly believe in things like "this horoscope is 100% this personality" and things like predicting someone's future based on that?

--

Person below: Please don't ask question like "what is your fav anime" (I get that a lot...) or at least I'd prefer something specific if it's related to it :^)

Well....frankly speaking, it wasn't anything noteworthy to say. Anime is aired a lot in my country so I don't exactly have to "get into" it and stumble upon it for being another cartoon on TV? My first anime was Doraemon which isn't exactly what people associate with most common anime and it took me a while to realize things like Pokemon and Digimon were one, haha. I guess the reason why I do watch it more and choose this artstyle is also because of the art itself, but that's another story. In short I frankly don't have a specific reason to get into it since it's treated like any cartoons on TV when I was younger and I'll eventually get into it since all I do back then was nothing but watch TV haha
