"Well I mean, that's why I'm here. I just need to see the application if that's alright. I can fill it out myself." Its not like she was illiterate or anything. She only spent 90% of her time reading. She offered a smile to the male and hoped that she didn't come off as too forward when she had asked for the app.
David was in the back room sorting through all of the playing cards. He had almost twenty-five thousand trading cards left to sort through not only by which game they belonged to but also alphabetically. The shop had just gone under a renovation and expanded so now he had more room to add what he really wanted, a case full of these single cards. He thought this was a great idea, I mean, how many times did a player come in and buy a booster pack for like maybe four or five dollars (depending on the game it went with) to only end up with terrible cards that they already had.
Once the place expanded, the first thing that David did was put in a nice, rather large, glass case and there was where he was going to store and sell all of these singles. Instead of paying four or five dollars for cards that one already had, all a person would have to do is come in, and ask to look through the cards and if they found the one that they wanted, he'd sell it to them for right at fifty cents. As long as the player knew what they were looking for, it should be relatively easy to find once the cards were sorted out alphabetically and by name. Which was why he was doing it in the first place. And thinking about it now, fifty cents a card wasn't all that bad, its the same amount of money that one would pay for the card if they got it in a booster pack of ten cards if the pack itself had cost five dollars. As a bonus they didn't have to keep all the shitty cards that came with it too.
He had just sat down when he heard the door swing open in the other room and ring a bell. "Hello?" a rather feminine voice called. "I'd like to apply for a job here. I saw your ad." David almost let out an audible groan but instead stood up and walked into the other room.
"You need a job?" he asked. Not realizing who, or rather what, he was talking to.
David blinked and rubbed his eyes. When he first opened Cyber City Comics he could tell you right now that the last thing he was expecting was for one of those weird companions to try and work here. But after thinking about it for a second, he did guess that they would need some sort of income eventually if they were expected to be some sort of members of society by their families..
"Here, just uh.. follow me. I have some stuff I'm working on." He turned around and walked back to the new expanded area of the store and sat back down in his previous spot and began sorting the cards. "Well, right now we don't really have a legitimate application. At least not for this store or anything I mean, its owned by just me and I don't have much help around here so your'e pretty much a shoo-in for the job." He stated pretty emotionless while he put one of the Venusar cards behind a Venomoth card. Pokemon seemed to be a rather popular game and he had a ton of cards for it and Magic the Gathering.
"You'd have to keep the shop clean, and help stock shelves when new comic orders come in and stuff. I mean its pretty usual things. I'm sure you can handle it and if we get another person or two on the staff here then we can definitely start doing some more stuff here. DnD meetings, trading card tournaments, even some video game tournaments if this place gets to be really good." He just seemed to keep talking and Laurita just nodded her head while he explained what all she would me doing. "So what's your name kid?" He finally asked.
"My name is Laurita. You can just call me Rita if you want to though." She nodded firmly when she finally told him her name. "What about you? What's your name?" She sat down across from him, looking at the mess of cards in front of them. It looked like he was working on pokemon cards, her species was supposed to be from that game, kinda cool if you asked her.
He looked up at her lazily and just said "David. Dave. Whatever works. You wanna start today? Start organizing those Magic the gathering cards over there. Alphabetically and by type please. Red deck, blue deck. etcetera. Just if you see any land cards don't put those there, I have a special place for those. Just sort those by color if you will please."
She nodded her head. She sure wasn't expecting to be working today but hey, if she got paid for it she didn't care and he seemed that a relatively okay guy to work with. She pulled over a box of Magic cards and began the tedious task of sorting through them.
She started with a handful of cards just pulled from the box, first she figured she'd sort through their colors and whether or not they were land cards. She figured after she got that done she'd start alphabetizing them.
"A lot of these cards are trade ins. I also like to purchase them in bulk and just open them up and sell them." David started talking about the cards they were sorting through. "Magic the Gathering is the most popular right now so I have a nice little supply of them. I do the same thing for stuff like Yu-Gi-Oh, Force of Will, Pokemon and some other things. Force of Will and Pokemon are two of my favorites as of late." He paused and looked up at her. "You're a pokemon aren't you? Noibat. Dex #714. Nice."
She only blinked for a moment. It wasn't every day that she thought about being a creature from some fantasy world. She didn't even think about if whether or not she was a popular creature from the game. It just didn't occur to her. "Huh? I guess I'm gonna have to get more into Pokemon then." She let out a quiet laugh while she continued sorting out the cards.
"Here. Lemme teach you how to play." David was moving the stacks of cards that he was working on over to one side of the table and pulled a couple of decks of pokemon cards from another box that was labeled 'Complete/Edited Decks' he just handed her a water deck and pulled out a fire one for him. Might as well give her the advantage for her first game.
He taught her first the basics, how to set up the cards on the playmat, what energies were and how to use them and when each turn started and ended. Then he went on to explain how to evolve a pokemon and about trainer cards and how they care beneficial to the game. Then he looked at her. "Really though, if you don't have a good deck it's gonna be up to fate to decide if you win or not. Your coin is your best friend and don't let your opponent touch it. That's bad luck." He said and sat down a plastic game coin in front of her.
"Well that means that one is already bad luck, you touched it!" She looked at him and smiled.
"Okay you got me, here." He pulled out a bag that had a few more of them in it and handed it to her, letting her pick out her own coin.
David spent about 45 minutes teaching her to play the game before she figured it out and was able to even beat him on her own. Her coin almost always seemed to flip in her favor. Very rarely did it screw her over. The two of them played about four rounds before he noticed the time. "Hey, help me pack up if you will? Can you come in for your first full day on Sunday?" He asked, packing up his deck and putting them back into the box.
"Sunday? Totally. I can make that. That's alright!" She put her deck back in the box and reached out and shook his hand. She helped him finish cleaning up the back room and waved him off before heading out. "Thanks again David! I'll see you Sunday then!" She grinned and the noibat walked out the door. Excited that she got her very first job, and it was working in a place she knew that she'd love!
