the combat system

In addition to your mage's base damage output (which you can read about here), every 10 gold counted for a piece of art, writing, or roleplay, will earn another +1 damage.

This means if your mage does 5 damage based on their stats, but your attack is worth 40 gold, they will deal an additional +4 damage. This is calculated before the double event bonus, as well as any effort bonus, is applied.

ALL PARTICIPATING MAGES receive +2 to their choice of Power or Discipline.
THE MAGE WHO DOES THE MOST DAMAGE receives the Killing Blow badge, is the slayer of the beast and receives +100 Gold, +1 Corruption, and their choice of scroll or amulet from the shop.
SECOND PLACE MAGE receives +75 Gold, and their choice of scroll or amulet from the shop.
THIRD PLACE MAGE receives +50 Gold, and their choice of scroll or amulet from the shop.

monster description

After a life of sorrow and heartbreak, the mage formerly known as Ravenflight has entered the stage for the final act of her tragedy, where Fortune awaits her with a cruel grin.

She has erupted into a large, strange beast of stars and darkness; a gigantic raven skull perched atop a writhing mass of tentacles and sharp claws. Vast wings blot out the sky, and all across her form are a multitude of poison-green eyes, sparkling with malice.

Above her, the sky has ripped open, revealing the darkness of space. Black tendrils reach downwards, creeping towards the earth.

Those who have come across the monster have named it The Night-cursed Crone.

monster abilities

The monster attacks those who dare come close with great stabs of its beak, leaving deep furrows in the ground where they land, and with swings and twists of its tentacles.

Beyond that, just being near the monster seems to invoke a crushing sadness, loneliness and existential dread; black moods that may linger until you move away from the monster’s vicinity.

Occasionally, the air around the Crone sizzles with a shower of meteors. They are small but heavy; about the size of walnuts, and there is a faint green shimmer within them if they are picked up. Some of them explode upon hitting the ground, others are simply lodged into the soft earth.

The monster has been spotted in the southwestern part of the Sunless Jungle, roaming along one of the river valleys. It seems to be drawn towards people and living beings.

Piercing, wailing cries can be heard from the monster’s mouth, echoing across the jungle, evoking distress and dread.

monster combat bonuses

Being together helps fend off the crushing existential dread. Mages working in pairs or groups deal +1 damage. (Applies to collabs and roleplay)
Those with a Light Scroll deal +1 damage.
For this monster hunt, Exploding Flasks deal +10 damage instead of +2.
Mages with powers pertaining to light, fire, electricity, and birds are at an advantage, and deal 2x damage. Applied to the base stat point damage, before gold damage is added.
Shadow/darkness and mind magic is at a disadvantage, and deal ½x damage. Applied to the base stat point damage, before gold damage is added.

Every piece of art, writing or roleplay made for this event featuring Mage characters counts as an "attack" on the monster. the damage your mage does is based on their stats and the monster's weaknesses; read the Hunt Guide for more info! Attacks for this hunt should be posted here. The event runs at least two weeks, and then ends when the monster's HP is lowered to 0.

prompt one: a cry from beyond

Your character finds themselves in the southwestern reaches of the Sunless Jungle, for reasons of their own. The road is serpentine, meandering between immense tree trunks, steep hills, and large stands of plant life; until abruptly, beyond a bend of the road, it opens up and begins to follow one of the many rivers in the area.

Soon enough, the river valley comes into view; sparsely inhabited, but with small villages and homesteads dotting the floodplain.

There is something strange going on, though. Across the valley, a patch of sky has darkened, as if split open to reveal a cold and vast night sky. Tendrils of darkness reach towards the earth. The air begins to feel heavy and oppressive, the weight of the world pressing down.

Suddenly your character hears a blood-curdling wail echo across the river valley; a cry full of heartbreak and endless sorrow.

What does your character do?

Prompt responses must be worth at least 1 gold (i.e. at least 100 words or at least an uncolored headshot).
Upload your response like any other art or literature submission, tag this character profile, and claim your gold; collect double your total count for prompt responses. Responses to this prompt should be done individually, one character per response.

prompt two: river-bound

As your character moves closer, they finally see the monstrosity: a great bird-like creature made of stars and darkness. It is moving slowly, each step making the ground tremble, but it seems to have a goal in mind: the twinkling lights of a small village, crouching right at the edge of the jungle. Its tentacles lash the air, and there is a hiss of meteors falling from the sky.

There are already some people gathered near the river. Your character can hear shouts and cries of panic, though they are almost drowned out by the monster’s wails.
