Language Translations for Creation

Posted 4 years, 6 months ago (Edited 2 years, 7 months ago) by Dez

Hey! I'm not sure if this is the right spot to post this, but I think it'd be cool to have a place for bilingual people to translate some cool phrases or words for creations. Personally I'm looking to see if someone can correctly translate "You can't handle the truth" from English to Latin.

I'm not bilingual myself, unfortunately, but maybe others who want correct translations can build this post up and help each other.

So what kinds of things do you want translated for your creations and how do you use them? I like using phrases or words to create names or locations :)

Edit: Wow, this post blew up more than I originally thought it would! From now on, I'll try to list the languages and the users that speak said languages below to make it easier for others to find the proper person they need! If there's any problems at all with what's listed, please let me know and I'll change it ASAP. If there are languages that are together that the native speakers suggest be separated, please also let me know! I don't want to offend anyone and I don't know much about different languages (but I'm learning a lot from everyone). Thank you to everyone for your assistance!

If anyone wants to know anything specific to translate, please ping in the forum someone from the list under the correct language. There are many people with many skills who have offered their time to help :)

Please try to keep things PG13, as there may be minors present. Also if anyone in the list wishes to be removed from it for any reason, please let me know! I will do so with no questions asked.

I know some Danish, and can help people translate some stuff in the language! I've been taking an accelerated course at my home university and am planning to start an advanced course in the Fall Semester ^^

Dez

AmphritriteL That's awesome! I hope the classes go well! :) Would you like me to list you as fluent but learning still?

Oxyhocin

Dez

Yes please! But instead of fluent, would it be alright to list me as a beginner or an intermediate? :>

Dez

AmphritriteL Sure, no problem! Since you'll be going into advanced classes, I'll go ahead and list you as intermediate if that's okay :) Always great getting more people interested in languages! And maybe you'll find more people who are native willing to speak to you and help you out!

Curious, though, as to what word has stuck out to you the most? Something that you learned in Danish that's funny sounding or has a funny meaning? For me and German, the word "backpfeifengesicht," which basically translates to "a face that is badly in need of a fist" or "a face that cries for a fist." Basically, "your face is begging me to punch it" XD And that kills me. So I'd like to know if there's anything funny or interesting that you've learned!

rimi-rin Great to have you! I'll definitely put you on the list :) Thank you so much for offering assistance! Same question above applies, though, if you don't mind? Is there a Swedish word or phrase that English speakers might find interesting or funny? I'd love to hear some of these XD Funny insults, words, names, anything! :)

Oxyhocin

Dez

Aaaa thank you!

The funniest word to me so far is "pudsig", which translates to odd in English but is pronounced "poo-see". Since my friends and I have the humor of 10 year old children, we enjoy parroting that around each other like the seagulls from Finding Nemo haha

Hmm..another thing I found interesting while learning the language is that there are...a lot of swears that involve invoking illness. For example, you have "for pokker" which is like the English equivalent of "damn it" but the literate translation is "for smallpox". There's also kraftknusme (kræften knus mig), which can be literally translated to "may the cancer crush me" ( ⚆ _ ⚆ ) If I remember correctly, it can be used like the f-word in english

Doctor-Ramen

First of all, I really appreciate this! I have a lot of ocs who speak languages other than English (the only language I actually know; I'm learning French but I can't quite speak it yet) and it's nice to have somewhere to go in case I want to feature a different language in a comic or writing project or something.

But I do wanna know: What's the best way to contact those of you who are on the list? Is it better to comment on your profile or send a private message? (I've had TH for a while but I'm not totally used to it yet, in case that isn't obvious)

Dez

AmphritriteL You  might want to change who you pinged XD Just wanting to make sure you knew that!

Also, that is hilariousI would have died laughing if I heard those in person XD The cussing thing is so extreme, but that's what's fascinating about different languages ._.' Sometimes they just go all out! Thank you so much for telling me these! It's always fun to hear them! Definitely keep learning more so that all of us can learn more XD

Doctor-Ramen So nice to see someone visit! Welcome! That's actually a really good question, if I'm being honest. I think it honestly depends on the person. One of the issues I'm having currently is that people will change their name, but not inform me here about the change. However, if you're entirely unsure of whether to post on their profile or PM them, feel free to ping them here on a public post! The forum is here specifically for that, so if anyone's uncomfortable with PMs or too many profile messages, this post be here for usage! :) Anyone and everyone is free to ping others for questions, as long as it's respectful towards the person, cultures, and language itself. That's why there's a list! :) Those who offer up assistance do so willingly. Thank you so much for asking, though. I feel that maybe it's not 100% clear on how to use this yet.

Also, I'm still entirely up for suggestions on this. It's the first time I've ever made a forum post quite like this, so it's all new to me. Please be patient if I mess up or get confused XD

Mono Do you wish for me to put you up for only Spanish then? That way it'll be easier for you and others to know what you're really good at :) Thank you so much for offering, btw. It's always good to have more people of different languages interested in helping out!

guddødemig omg 😭😭I fixed it shhdjajdjjsjs

Dez

AmphritriteL XD No worries!

rimi-rin Phhhttt XD Not going to lie, that got me laughing! I don't think I've heard many other songs in other languages, come to think of it. Not anything besides Japanese and Korean.

:0 I didn't know that, either! Perhaps those who speak Swedish fluctuate in tones and pitch, like you mentioned, a lot more than other languages. Fluctuations that kinda give off expressions, like how you can hear a question or if someone is exasperated. That's really interesting to learn! I'll have to listen to some things in Swedish now. Maybe find a movie and really get immersed :)
