Language Translations for Creation

Posted 4 years, 6 months ago (Edited 2 years, 7 months ago) by Dez

Hey! I'm not sure if this is the right spot to post this, but I think it'd be cool to have a place for bilingual people to translate some cool phrases or words for creations. Personally I'm looking to see if someone can correctly translate "You can't handle the truth" from English to Latin.

I'm not bilingual myself, unfortunately, but maybe others who want correct translations can build this post up and help each other.

So what kinds of things do you want translated for your creations and how do you use them? I like using phrases or words to create names or locations :)

Edit: Wow, this post blew up more than I originally thought it would! From now on, I'll try to list the languages and the users that speak said languages below to make it easier for others to find the proper person they need! If there's any problems at all with what's listed, please let me know and I'll change it ASAP. If there are languages that are together that the native speakers suggest be separated, please also let me know! I don't want to offend anyone and I don't know much about different languages (but I'm learning a lot from everyone). Thank you to everyone for your assistance!

If anyone wants to know anything specific to translate, please ping in the forum someone from the list under the correct language. There are many people with many skills who have offered their time to help :)

Please try to keep things PG13, as there may be minors present. Also if anyone in the list wishes to be removed from it for any reason, please let me know! I will do so with no questions asked.

Dez Yeah I do speak Swedish too but I'm not very good at it! We have studied it at school since middle school & I can understand a lot of Swedish when I read, but I'm incredibly rusty and it's nothing compared to my Finnish or English skills haha. I've been meaning to start buying manga or something in Swedish to get more chances to use it again

Dez

Caine Omg. It never occurred to me that there'd be manga in Swedish! I had no idea it reached that far! T^T I'm so happy. Once upon a time it was hard to find it in English, but now the world has come so far!

A bit dramatic of me but seriously, that's amazing! I'd love to actually see pictures of it sometime to see the difference. I think it would be incredible.

I wish the US did more language learning at a young age. We tend to only have it in high school and not even that much, plus it's not actually required (at least it wasn't at my school). And the majority of the time is either Spanish or French, which there's nothing wrong with either, I just wish there was more options for everyone.

Caine

@dez Oh yeah for sure, Nordic countries have had manga in the 80s already and in Finland we have had manga in supermarkets since the early 00s, although in Sweden it's apparently not as "mainstream" as it has become here in that sense. I do remember buying comics made out of the sailor moon anime from Swedish supermarkets in like uuhhh very late 90s though so there is that!

Yeah I think it's really good when schools at least offer a possibility to learn other languages! In Finland we start learning English when we're 9 (it's not an official language in Finland but rather a foreign language) and we start Swedish when we're uuuhh 13 I think? I also was able to take German for a few years in lukio because we happened to have a teacher who was fluent in it.

Dez

Caine Aahh all of this is amazing to hear! Thank you so much for sharing all of this. It always makes my day to learn about other cultures and all :) I've learned a lot from this post!

ElithianFox

Native Flemish speaker here! I can help with both Dutch and Flemish (the Dutch spoken in Belgium), the latter of which can be useful since Flemish is a spoken language and there exists no written equivalent for it (none we can agree on anyway), nor any dictionaries or translations. For the love of all that's good, please don't make your Flemish Belgian character speak Dutch instead of Flemish, that's like having an American character who speaks with the most exaggerated, most stereotypical British accent l'D

Also, OP, have you considered editing the thread into a list of all people who volunteered? That way people don't have to comb through the thread to find someone who can help them ;v;

Dez

ElithianFox :0 That's actually a really good idea XD Honestly this is the first time I've done something like this and didn't exactly think it'd get so big so fast! Kinda embarrassing 😶 I'll have to get on to that soon! Thanks for the suggestion!

Also thanks for the information on your language! I feel that, with the comparison of US English vs British English, Flemish Belgium vs Dutch is important to know. Thanks!

atempause

I'm a native Czech and Slovak speaker o: well there is already one user with the same languages but the more the merrier or something right?

Dez

clockwork Good to have you here! And yes, it doesn't matter how many users we get here that can speak the same language. The more options and resources people have, then the better! :) Some people speak different dialects or are from different areas of their country, so sometimes speak things differently than others. It's always great to have different sources to go by and all the users who have posted so far and who will post are equally welcomed here! So thank you very much for joining!

DanTheMemeMan

I can speak broken Spanish and I' learning Japanese

Dez

DanTheMemeMan Nice to have you here! :) I'm currently trying to get a list going for the main post so it'll be easier for others to find who they need to contact. Thank you so much for your interest and assistance!

fuelli

I'm a native French speaker, if that helps! I'm also a German major in uni so I think I could help in basic stuff, but I'm far from being fluent yet so I'd suggest to ask a native instead of me for more complex questions :')

Dez

Judas-la-Carotte Awesome!! It's great to have you here! :) I'm curious what a common French phrase is? Like an idiom or something you tend to hear a lot. Like over here if someone is mad they might say "that's the last straw," probably referring to "the straw that broke the camel's back."

heterodont

This seems like a handy idea! I'll throw my hand into the ring

I guess I can be considered a sorta native spanish speaker - 2nd gen mexican raised speaking the language. The only thing that I sorta have issues with is accent marks but for the most part I have means of checking those.

Dez

heterodont I'm glad you like the idea! Thank you for assisting! :)

Hmm. How would you say "your eyes sparkle like the stars" in Spanish? I'd be curious to know that one 😊 Or other kinds of common flirty phrases. One of my characters is a bit of a flirt 😁

heterodont

Probably "tus ojos brillan como las estrellas" afaik spanish is pretty literal when it comes to translation :V certain words have a 'masculine/feminine' tone, o and a respectively, to them and that can affect the usage of los/las depending on what the word..ends with. There's also 'eres muy hermoso/hermosa' which just means 'you're very beautiful'.  Also another is 'No puedo dejar de pensar en ti' which p much means that they can't stop thinking about the person of interest!

I hope that helps haha, I don't have much of the way of vocabulary when it comes to flirting xD
