Language Translations for Creation

Posted 4 years, 6 months ago (Edited 2 years, 7 months ago) by Dez

Hey! I'm not sure if this is the right spot to post this, but I think it'd be cool to have a place for bilingual people to translate some cool phrases or words for creations. Personally I'm looking to see if someone can correctly translate "You can't handle the truth" from English to Latin.

I'm not bilingual myself, unfortunately, but maybe others who want correct translations can build this post up and help each other.

So what kinds of things do you want translated for your creations and how do you use them? I like using phrases or words to create names or locations :)

Edit: Wow, this post blew up more than I originally thought it would! From now on, I'll try to list the languages and the users that speak said languages below to make it easier for others to find the proper person they need! If there's any problems at all with what's listed, please let me know and I'll change it ASAP. If there are languages that are together that the native speakers suggest be separated, please also let me know! I don't want to offend anyone and I don't know much about different languages (but I'm learning a lot from everyone). Thank you to everyone for your assistance!

If anyone wants to know anything specific to translate, please ping in the forum someone from the list under the correct language. There are many people with many skills who have offered their time to help :)

Please try to keep things PG13, as there may be minors present. Also if anyone in the list wishes to be removed from it for any reason, please let me know! I will do so with no questions asked.

There are many idioms that exist so it would be hard to pick one, but since you used "that's the last straw," as an example, its French counterpart would be "c'est la goutte d'eau qui fait déborder le vase" (it's the drop of water that makes the vase overflow)!

Dez

heterodont Ah that makes sense! I tried learning German once before and they had gendered words as well. Very confusing to a native English speaker who has never really grown up with other languages. We have things like pronouns, but I don't think we have specific words that are for male/female. And a lot of our language is made up of other languages that we're not really taught about, so "yacht," "faux," and "debauchery" are mispronounced sometimes up until adulthood @_@ Others are like "bologna," "bouquet," we have "Arkansas" which is pronounced differently from "Kansas." English is a really hard language to learn, even for English speakers to fully understand XD

Thank you so much for translating for me! I think you're pretty good at giving flirts in a different language, so no worries!

Judas-la-Carotte Oh I really like that one! Idioms and common sayings are always interesting to hear in different languages. I absolutely love hearing them and what they translate to. That and words that we don't have in English. One of my favorites is "l’appel du vide." I really wish we had more things like that in English. There are some feelings everyone gets that seriously need words to describe them!

Hareryuu

You can list me for Japanese, I'm decent (JLPT 3) and always happy to help with translations, naming and other things!

Edit: I wrote the acronym wrong XD

Dez

Superusami XD It's perfectly fine. And welcome! Thank you for your assistance! Always good to have more people willing to help others out. I think it's awesome to have a place for proper translations, since Google translate is so terrible @_@ Plus it's nice to learn a lot about other languages!

Are there any others you're interested in? And do you know Kanji?

Hareryuu

No worries!! I always love to help folks out, it's great practice for me and helps others get decent language advice! I tutored some of the kids in my class one year so u_u

I only speak English and Japanese, and yes!! I know like. god i dont know at least a hundred LOL almost definitely more i studied all 4 years of highschool and I learned tons so.

I actually do translation work, I did the Japanese rap in this song and I wrote this song myself (its absolutely not my best work though its so bad XD) but yeah I can speak read and write Japanese fluently enough to sustain friendships and talk long term with non-english speaking Japanese folks (chat snippet below the cut sorry im like. going off LOL)!

Dez

Superusami That's awesome! I know a lot of people will have issues will Kanji so it's nice having multiple people who know it.

reinapepiada

I speak native spanish! /o/ I'm venezuelan, currently living in Chile so I can probably even sparkle a lil bit of regional slang if necessary! I love helping others with languages!

Dez

reinapepiada So good to have you! Thank you for your assistance! :) what kind ofslang do you know that stands out to you as interesting? I'd love to see what the regions might have!

reinapepiada

Thank you!

I think one of the most fascinating things is that different countries conjugate verbs differently- like in Venezuela we use the informal 'tu' (ex. ¿Como estás?) As opposed to the formal 'usted' (¿Cómo está?) Where as in other countries like Colombia, the 'usted' form is more the norm

In Chile, people use a version of 'vos' which ends certain verbs with 'ai' (¿Cómo estai?)

There's also this video that addresses how difficult it is to speak Spanish across every Spanish speaking country. It's long but it's really worth the watch if you want to understand the experience!

Dez

reinapepiada That's so interesting! I've always wondered what caused splits like that in the same language. So many people can speak the same language but differently. Thanks so much for telling me this! I'll have to check the video out when I'm back home :)

RaikaiRan

I speak german fluently c:  and understand english well enough to offer my help :) But I am not that great at writing english but for translating into german it doesn't matter, I think xD

Dez

RaykayRa Ah thanks so much! I tried learning a bit of German but I'm still terrible at the grammar XD What is a favorite phrase you like to hear or say to others in German? :)

Dez

piineapples Awesome, good to have you here! And I'm glad you find this post to your liking :) I'll add you to the list as able to speak practically but are still learning. If you'd like, I'm sure some of the other fluent speakers would love to chat with you, especially if you're learning their language. The best way to learn is to have conversations, right? Give it a try and see if they'll help!

SoraChiiy Hello! Welcome to the post! Thank you so much for offering your assistance! I'll definitely add you to the list :3 I feel it would be awesome for even more people to join. Just out of curiosity, how would you say "Hello, my lady. Would you like to dance?" in Arabic? I'm not sure how polite and formal or informal things work or if there's anything like that, but I like seeing what other languages are like :)
