28. Superstitious - 12. Cursed Doll

After crying her little eyes out from her disaster of a ball, Sandra gets up and cleans her face. She was a strong and beautiful woman. She can bounce back from this insult. Of course she could! She was going to get back at that horrid woman and prove it!

She changes into a strong and beautiful outfit to pair with her mood. She slams open her suite door and nearly runs into someone who was standing right outside. “You bastard! What are you doing?? You could have hurt me!”

She looks up the obstacle and chokes. It was that horrid Dextroluma woman again! “YOU!” She yells and lunges at her.

The woman steps back quickly leaving Sandra to fall onto her face. “Oh dear, you startled me.” She says kneeling down to help the flustered and angry Auratail up.

“Do NOT touch me!” Sandra squawks. “What are you doing back here? This is private property! I will have you removed!”

Dahlia Rose steps back, her hands up. “Please, I meant no harm. I am just unfamiliar with the customs. I have come to beg forgiveness for any transgressions.”

Sandra glares at her. “Well then start begging…” She growls. “Or removal will be the least of your concerns.”

Dahlia Rose bobs her head deep, “Yes of course. But first, I must present my apology with a gift. It is a custom from my village. A superstition I suppose. That an apology is best received with a gift?” She muses. “Though it continues along that the gift must equate to either the size of the transgression or the nobility of the one offended. Whichever is greater.” She pauses watching Sandra’s fingers tapping impatiently on her crossed arms stop.

“Oh?” Sandra’s expression softens. Gift? She loves gifts. “Then what is it?”

Dahlia Rose smiles behind her veil. “It took me some time to think of a gift worthy of the situation. Which is why I didn’t come right away. However I did come up with something I believe is suited. It is one of my most treasured possessions. I hope you accept it.” She holds up a box about two feet long and around 8 inches wide and as much tall. “And my apology with it.”

Sandra snatches the box from her, “Yea sure I forgive you or whatever. Now just go, we are done here.” She didn’t want the Dextroluma to change her mind about giving her her most valuable possession so she wants her gone immediately.

Dahlia stands back up. “Would you not want to check the gift first? Make sure it is one you wish to accept?” She asks, knowing full well the greed of this woman was going to make the decision. One that would be final.

“I am sure it is fine if it's the best thing you own. Now just go.” Sandra waves her away and goes back in her room with it, closing the door behind her..

The Dextroluma woman smiles and leaves.

In her room, Sandra locks her door. She goes to her bed to open her new gift.

She rips away the wrapping and lifts the lid, revealing a beautifully detailed porcelain doll. She sits back not having expected that. What good was this? Perhaps it was a collectors item or something. She takes it from the box and looks it over for a mark or brand on it. The only thing she found was a strange symbol on the bottoms of the feet and an even stranger smudge on the back of the neck hidden by hair. She huffs again and puts it back in the box.

Worthless. Well at least immediately. Perhaps she can take it to her father’s appraiser tomorrow and see if it might be worth anything anyway.

Later that evening as she is getting ready for bed she goes over to look at it again while she is brushing her hair and blinks. Did… did it always look like her?
