N. Cass & Shire

Cass & Shire [ 540/500 word minimum ]

Cass met Shire back when he was still a thief. His ways have changed now. He saw the light of his goddess and serves her as a loyal disciples. Well, most of the time. Shiny coin can be just a little too tempting sometimes.

It was this way on the day he met Shire. He overheard a conversation of two guards talking that a certain noble has just received some new jewellery and it was now all stored in their vault. Guards never understood (and he tried explaining multiple times) that storages aren’t the place for shiny things. They should be displayed. Preferably on his body.

Using his magic and stealth he quietly sneaked through the mansion until he found the place he was looking for. Very lucky, the one guarding it was slumped on a chair and seemed to be asleep. An easy job this would be. He took out his trusty red crowbar and was about to fiddle with the lock, when he discovered it already broken. Curious. With the weapon still in hand he slowly opened the door. Inside was a small, strongly built lioness. She was humming some cheerful melody and rifling through the contents of the vault. She noticed him, smiled and winked. His jaw dropped slightly.

“Well? Are you coming in or what?” - were her first words.

“Excuse me?”

“You’re obviously not a guard, not with that crowbar and untidy look” - Cass looked down at his messy fur, a little hurt. - “Which can only mean you’re a thief. Too bad, you’ve been bested”

She laughed. Cass narrowed his eyebrows.

“I’ve been outsped if anything. I would’ve easily done it myself, you know. I have, plenty of times.”

She laughed again, putting a couple of golden necklaces over her head and decorating herself with a tiara. She was glittering with gold and jewels from the tips of her paws to the tips of her ears.

“Oh really? You’re saying you’re such a tough guy? Lets see how you can handle this”

And without explanation she toppled over a massive statue which shattered into pieces upon hitting the ground. They heard yells and the running of guards.

“Think fast”

Swiftly, Shire moved out, grabbed his crowbar, broke a window and jumped out the window. Cass was still standing rooted to the spot as she run around a corner.

“Hey!” he yelled after her, realising she still had his crowbar.

“Hey!” he heard a guard yell behind him.

Without much choice, he jumped out the window and followed after her and the guards behind him. He run through the streets, but his stamina was going down and the guards were still in pursuit. He entered a dark alley to catch his breath, but suddenly something grabbed him and pulled up. He found himself on top of a rooftop with Shire smiling at him.

“You’re not so bad, but here’s a tip: if you’re not a good runner - hide.”

They both flattened themselves and watched the streets below where confused soldiers were scattering.

“Here” Shire said, handing over his crowbar with a golden ruby necklace wrapped around it. “Perhaps we’ll meet again” She winked and just like that she was gone, disappearing into the darkness of the night.
