Neredechinoshi

A type of ghost in Mar folklore. Their name means 'unrooted' as they are people whose roots to the land were cut off. They are transparent, wispy beings not beholden to gravity. They steal heavy objects to keep themselves from floating off into the sky. Neredechinoshi retain none of the memories, convictions, or morality that comprised their former selves.

According to legend, the neredechinoshi were created when an outsider came to a small village having stolen magical pruners from Kokab. He cut off the invisible roots of his hosts while they were sleeping and they became rootless ghosts. In some versions the ghosts kill him in vengeance. In others, he is able to control the neredechinoshi and uses them to inforce his tyranny on the village until the surviving people are finally able to kill him.

The neredechinoshi are the spaces you see between trees when the forest is dark. They remain in the forest to this day, stealing the roots of those foolish enough to fall asleep in their domain. They are said to target outsiders with more force than locals, perhaps remembering the man who cursed them. Your roots can only be cut when you're asleep, so if you need to spend a night among the trees you must have at least one layer between your body and the earth.
