POTD 5/10/2021 - Kat and Beatrix

"First things first," Kat had said, "what do you know about hunting?"
They hadn't been together long yet, a day or two at most. But if he was going to help this kitten get home, he would have to make sure she was equipped to survive. And survival had to start somewhere.
Beatrix thought for a minute. "Mmm... Well, I know what hunting is," she answered. "It's like when the lions on those nature shows Lyssa likes catch an antelope or something. They chase them down and pounce on them, and then they eat them."
"...Antelope. Right..." Oh boy. "Well, you've got the right general idea. Have to eat to live, have to hunt to eat. Our targets are going to be... quite a bit smaller, though."
"Hmm... so maybe, like, a rabbit?" the younger cat asked.
Kat looked her over. A rabbit... That was better, he had to admit, but even that prey would be easily her size or more at this point. "Maybe in a few months," Kat replied. "Even... smaller."
Beatrix gave a contemplative hum. "Hrmm... oh! There were squirrels outside my house," she declared. "Maybe something like that?"
Oh, he could already imagine the poor girl getting stuck up in a tree and not knowing how to get herself back down. But he had to work with something. "Sure. Sure, squirrels," he said. "Or, you know. Mice, birds, maybe a lizard-"
"Hang on, sorry, sir, did you say lizards?"
Kat nodded. "Yeah, lizards. Why, were you interested? They're a bit tricky; pretty fast, and you have to make sure you get them by the body or the head, as the local species are capable of detaching their tails to escape from predators - That's us - I'm pretty sure that's a common trait in lizards as a whole? But they're a viable food source if you manage to catch them-"
   "I'm sorry, lizards."
Oh, she was going to be hung up on the lizard thing all day, wasn't she? "...Why don't you just observe for now?" Kat suggested.
Babied little indoor cat, never spent a day outside in her life until now. This was going to be a process.
But he was up for a challenge.
