How did these two characters form a relationship? If Familial, what makes it stand out from other family relationships they may have?

Prompt R 02 - Kat and Mitko

"This is ridiculous," Mitko complained, swishing his tail and wincing in pain. "We can't communicate effectively with her, she's biting our tails-"
"She's a capable hunter, at least. And we can't effectively communicate with your fox, either," Kat pointed out.
"I don't know why he's here either, don't look at me!" the younger cat said. "What is it about you lot and foxes, anyway, huh? First Ragin dragging me into your mess, now... whatever this new one's name is...!"
"You didn't have to come with him," Kat pointed out.
"Oh, please, I wasn't just going to leave him. He's not a wild fox, he was some human's pet, he wouldn't have lasted three days with only the two of you on his own. I'm not that bad."
The older cat shook his head. "Do you even want to be here?"
"If I'm going to keep getting bitten, not really!" Mitko snapped. "But I don't have much choice, now, do I?"
"It's not just the two of us any more. You could leave."
   "Well, I'm not going to."

Kat and Mitko's relationship formed (and if we're being honest, has yet to grow much further from) when he and his fox friend stumbled across the Wayfarers, at the time comprised of a mere two cats: Beatrix and, well, Kat. What Ragin saw in them, Mitko didn't know, and given the language barriers between their species, asking wasn't much of an option, but the fox was quickly attached to them for one reason or another, and so, in turn, was Mitko. He didn't especially want any part in this, but if his friend was here, he would have to be, too; Kat was obviously an experienced hunter, if he was managing to provide for both himself and the clueless little housecat following him around like a lost child (which, as it turned out, she was, though that was beside the point), but Ragin's hunting methods were... unique, thanks to his lack of experience from growing up among humans and their experience working together, and unless he know how to hunt with him, the other cat would be of little help keeping the fox alive. And so it was that their relationship formed - One of begrudging respect and mild skepticism on both sides, and one Mitko wasn't especially enthusiastic about, but a relationship nonetheless.
