Element and Attribute


Resonators, being the most susceptible to rhythm, have developed into many different forms, making nearly each one unique. Especially among the rarer species of resonators, it's quite difficult to find two who share the same unique traits.

There are some general characteristics they can share, however. With these shared traits there are little quirks to their behavior, even amongst similar species.

Element

Elements are classic elemental types. Each resonator can only have one element and can only use Spells and their ad Libertum of their element,

Fire - Fire, combustion, explosions
Water – Includes Ice, mist, etc
Lightning – Includes thunder/sound
Earth – Sand, rocks, etc
Nature – Wood/plant attributes, poisons, etc

Solar – Using the power of light, the sun, etc; also encompasses Wind
Lunar – Using the power of darkness, the moon, etc; encompasses mental/supernatural powers (telekinesis, etc)

Null – No element, can cast basic spells of all elements, but at one rank lower in terms of power. Can’t cast advanced level spells of elements. Trades power for sheer versatility.

Element Interactions
When using elemental spells against other resonators, an element strong against another element will deal bonus damage against that target, where a target strong against the element will resist it.

Solar and Lunar cancel each other out when they interact and take bonus damage from each other

Null elements have no spells of their own, but do not take any bonus damage nor resist any element

Resonant Bonus
Resonators provide their linked Maestro with a small bonus that they themselves also have; this doesn't cost any Rhythm and is an innate part of their powers


Fire – Heat/cold resistance
Water – Minor healing from sources of water
Lightning – Healed by electricity
Earth – Attuned to earth elements (dirt, sand, metal)
Nature – Poison/Venom resistance
Solar – Passive healing in sunlight
Lunar – Enhanced vision

Behavior
The resonator's element can affect small things about how they behave, and critically how the environment can affect them both short and long term. This section will detail some of the more common quirks one may encounter based on their resonator's element.

Fire

  • Aversion to water
    • Near boiling water is preferred and how most fire-elements bathe/shower
  • Smoking
    • Due to their nature resistance, the poisonous effects of regular tobacco consumption are near non-existent
  • Emotional Warmth
    • Fire resonators can feel out compatibility with others based on how others feel to them
      • Most feel cold to fire elementals, indicating incompatibility 
      • A sense of warmth from another individual, fire element or not indicates a compatibility, either personally or rhythmically
  • Food preference
    • Due to their Nature resistance, Fire elementals have a high tolerance and preference for spicy foods.

Water

  • Fondness of water
    • Keeping a water resonator away from swimming/large bodies of water can cause depression or other adverse health effects for the afflicted resonator
  • Warm - Cold Water dichotomy
    • Water resonators despite sharing the same spell pool and elemental weaknesses have a minor divide between the meta element. 
      • Warm water resonators prefer more tropical climates such as the Sierra Islands, south of the Lyberteran mainland and are susceptible to the cold like any other person
      • Cold water resonators prefer more northernly waters such as those of the Surgelare Islands just off the North-eastern coast of Lybertera and have a difficult time in warmer climates
      • This is more of a sliding scale rather than a binary system and you can find water resonators comfortable no matter what the water temperature is

Lightning

  • Attraction to electricity
    • It's fairly common for lightning resonators to wander around in severe thunderstorms, attracting bolts of lightning to strike them
    • During dry seasons, one may find their lightning-elements sticking forks or other metal objects into plug sockets for that hit of electricity
      • Most modern homes have robust electrical systems to handle a bored lighting element straining the system. 
  • Extraneous charge
    • It is easy for Lightning resonators to build a static charge, especially in cooler, drier climates
    • Some maestros get so called "grounding shoes" for their resonators to keep excess charge off of them
      • The health effects of these on Lightning elementals is still being studied.

Earth

  • Allergies
    • It's incredibly common for earth resonators to have severe pollen allergies
  • Weakness affecting food choice
    • Earth resonators, being more susceptible to poisons, typically have a very weak tolorance for spicy foods and will actively avoid them if possible

Nature

  • Temperature sensitivity
    • Extreme heat or cold greatly affect Nature elements and they will become noticeably lethargic in either extremity. 
  • Poison resistance affecting food choice
    • It's quite common for Nature elements to prefer spicy foods due to their natural poison resistance
    • Additionally, they can consume berries and other fruits normally hazardous to others

Solar

  • Diurnal Clock
    • It's easier for Solar elements to sleep at night, but they can adjust to a nocturnal sleep schedule, though some bouts of insomnia may occur

Lunar

  • Nocturnal Clock
    • It's easier for Lunar elements to sleep during the day, but they can adjust to a diurnal sleep schedule, though some bouts of insomnia may occur. 
  • Mental Stability
    • Lunar elements have high mental fortitude and are resilient to most forms of mental attacks or conditioning.
  • Supernatural sensitivity (debated)
    •  It is said that Lunar resonators are more susceptible to paranormal phenomena such as ghosts, though this is widely dismissed by the academic community
      • Given some of the Lunar element's natural abilities, this has perpetuated many claims of paranormal encounters being faked 

Null

  • Bonus Rhythm
    • Due to the lack of an ad-Lib, Null-elements tend to have some of the highest overall rhythm potential of their contemporaries
      • Though due to the lack of higher-level spells, they can only wield other elements at a very basic level

Attribute

A resonators attribute can also affect aspects of their physical body and personality. The "Noble" Attributes (Slashing, Piercing, or Crushing) are those mastered by the Noble Swords and passed down through the bloodlines that served under them. The "Non-Noble" attributes (Healing, Shielding, or Null) are the natural attributes that existed well before the Noble Sword's intervention

Slashing – Swords, magic is primarily cast as thin slicing attacks, average damage, average drain
Piercing – Arrows, spears, etc. Magic can be cast as thin penetrating arrows. Drains the slowest, deals the least damage
Crushing  - Clubs, flails etc, magic is cast as thick beams, drains the fastest, but deals the most damage,

Null – magic is cast plainly, can be a stream kinda like a flamethrower

Shielding – Specializes in defensive magic, barriers of that element, can have weaknesses and strengths against elemental types. Shielding attacks in a wave,
Healing – Specializes in healing self and others, element manifests as orbs to be thrown by the resonator

Crescendo - The ability that allows Shielders and Healers to use spells of the other attribute but only half as effective as a pure user of that attribute.



Slashing

  • Compromised build
    • Slashing elements tend to have slightly better agility and strength compared to non-noble attributes
Piercing

  • Speed build
    • Piercing elements tend to be thinner, lighter and more agile than any other attribute.
    • Hard for them to gain weight or musculature 

Crushing

  • Bulk build
    • Crushing elements tend to be taller and heavier than any other attribute
    • Easy to gain weight and muscle

Healing

  • Compassionate Personality
    • Healing Attributes tend to be nicer, more caring than their contemporaries
    • They also have a tendency to be more resilient both physically and emotionally than their non-healing counterparts

Shielding

  • Protective Personality
    • Shielding Attributes tend to be more on guard than other attributes
    • Typically very loyal to their maestro
      • Shielding attributes become quite despondent when frequently traded amongst maestros and need stability to be effective

Null

  • None
    • Null-attributes do not possess any special properties outside of not having their personality or physicality controlled by their Attribute

Perception

Even though resonators of different elements function in similar ways, they're still treated differently in spite of their similarities. Most of the time resonators are treated less as people and more treated as commodities 

Fire

  • Typically utilized by any profession where fire is involved (fire-fighters, blacksmiths, etc.

Water

  • Kept in water-rich environments such as Lybertera
  • Also can be found in water-poor environments for water creation

Lightning

  • Usually used for back-up power generation, recharging/powering electronics, etc

Earth

  • Used in construction, landscaping, and clean-up crews
  • Can be found repairing damage from spells to return the environment to the way it was

Nature

  • Utilized in farming and greenhouses to not only assist with the growing and maintenance of crops but to ensure proper soil content
  • Can also be employed to deal with environments with heavy poison/radiation in the air

Solar

  • The go-to "bodyguard" type resonator thanks to their relative lack of weaknesses
  • Looked at as very prestigious to own, especially in Unis-Résonne

Lunar

  • On Riterra Lunar resonators are looked down upon by a majority of the population 
  • Luna is the opposite (other elements are seen as lesser

Null

  • Usually the element kept by most traditional households due to their utility, low-spell level and lack of any traits that need to be maintained
  • Also used in competitive environments as the team's anchor due to the versatility of spell usage

Attributes

  • The Noble attributes are typically the ones sought after due to their lineage lining up with the Noble Swords. 
  • Healers are found commonly in medical fields
  • Shielders are found in jobs where there is an element of danger 
    • Example: Fire-Shielding resonators are the popular choice of fire fighters
Rarity

There are four categories which resonators are separated into which determines their scarcity

  • Common - The regular species one would encounter on Riterra, this is everything from dogs and cats, to birds and dragons. There is a sliding scale of rarity within this distinction, but most animal-based resonators would fall under this umbrella
  • Prestige - These are common resonators with a noble lineage, clans like the Renard or Albrights would fall in here. Still common resonators, but their bloodline and ancestry makes them special for one reason or another
  • Mirage - Rare types of resonators not commonly seen on Riterra, whenever a new one shows up it makes a stir showing up in the news and such. Examples of these would be Golems, Dinosaurs, or Fairy resonators
  • Ethereals - One of a kind immortal resonators who have chosen to follow a maestro, unlike the previous three classes of resonators, these are typically significantly more powerful than the average resonator.

Illnesses

Resonators while being hardy against many forms of physical damage thanks to their rhythm being used to re-enforce their defenses and increasing their natural healing capabilities, does leave them vulnerable in one aspect: the environment. Resonator bodies are susceptible to a variety of rhythm-based illnesses that is again determined by their element.

Fire
Re-kindling Illness
Caused by over exposure to cold water. Resonator becomes hypothermic and difficulty using Fire spells and ad-Lib.
Treatment - Hot foods, warmth, and rest

Water
Evaporation Illness
Caused by under exposure to water. Resonator gains symptoms similar to dehydration and difficulty using Water spells and ad-Lib.
Treatment - re-introduction of fluids and soaking

Lightning
Low Charge Illness
Caused by over-using Lightning based spells or discharging too fast and too frequently. Resonator becomes lethargic, with risk of falling into a coma. Typically electricity based magic is un-usable when afflicted with this illness.
Treatment - Recharging resonator either from natural sources of electricity, other lightning element resonators, or by artificially generated electricity

Earth
Weathering Illness
Caused by over-exposure to pollen or other plant-based allergens. Resonator experiences cold-like symptoms, and extreme physical weakness/loss of physical strength. Difficulty with Earth spells and unusable ad-libs
Treatment - removal from afflicting allergens, rest in dry pollen free environment.

Nature
Wilting Illness
Caused by an imbalance in water intake and over exposure to the sun. Resonator is subject to heat-stroke like symptoms. Difficulty with plant-based nature spells and ad-Libs
Treatment - Removal from the sun, re-introduction of fluids and nutrient rich foods

Solar
Cloudy Day Illness
Caused by insufficient intake of natural light. Resonator becomes lethargic and more prone to sleep and/or changes in mood or behavior. Difficulty with Light-based solar spells.
Treatment - Increased activity during and day and exposure to sunlight

Lunar
Cloudless Day Illness
Caused by over-exposure to sun and/or disruption of nocturnal circadian based rhythm. Resonator becomes lethargic and more prone to sleep and/or changes in mood or behavior. Difficulty with Shadow-based lunar spells
Treatment - Increased activity at night, and exposure to moonlight
