Zalavan

Zalavan are a curious breed of resonator that rarely appear on Riterra. There exists a legend of a subterranean city that exists somewhere in Nabhon where they come from.

By all accounts, Zalavan look human, however there are several notable differences between them and pure humans.

  • Their height maxes out at around five feet (around 150cm)
    • Average height for adults is around four to four and a half feet tall (around 120cm to 137cm roughly)
  • Rather than normal hair, their hair is made up of a fine grass that spouts from their head.
    • If they're sick or their rhythm is depleted their hair will brown and wilt.
    • Other plant seeds can be "planted" in their hair and will grow out the appropriate flower or fruit
      • Growing plants this way is incredibly fast, taking only 8 hours of sleep for a fully grown flower/fruit to develop.
  • They can photosynthesize, and take in water through their hair and skin, however this is horribly inefficient and in most situations it's usually just faster to eat a normal meal.
    • Though given this ability, they are very good survivalists
  • Zalavan gender is more plant-like than melopomorphic
    • Gender to a Zalavan is whether they're a fruit bearer, flower bearer, or both
    • Though from a human perspective all Zalavan are female, they only care about their plant abilities
  • In Zalavan couples, when a flower bearer and a fruit bearer mix pollen a seedling is produced, which is buried in the ground. After a period of twenty eight days, a cabbage like bulb will spout and open to reveal a newborn baby.
    • In rare circumstances, the seedling can be carried off in the wind (usually if Anemochoric plants are involved).
      • This is usually how "wild" Zalavan children are found, but this is exceptionally rare as scherzando typically get to the seedlings first
    • Zalavan can also bear children in the usual human way, and the pregnancy proceeds like a normal human pregnancy
Despite how human they look, they are more closely related to resonators than maestros.

  • Thanks to their unique attribute (Adaptable), Zalavan spell lists change depending on the type fruit/flower currently being grown.
    • If no plant is being grown, Zalavan resonators can only use basic Nature spells
    • Holding an uprooted plant will grant one use of the appropriate element spell, however, this will totally drain the plant in question and make it unusable
      • The bigger the plant the stronger the spell. (ie. A single strawberry will give a weak heal, while an entire strawberry plant will grant a much larger heal)
Toxic plants (Holly, nightshade, poison ivy, etc) grant Nature spells

Sweet plants (strawberries, cherries, pears, etc) grant Healing spells
Spicy plants (Peppers, chilis, etc) grant Fire spells
Hard seed plants (Almonds, Walnuts, etc) grant Shielding spells
Cool plants (Mints, and other mentha family plants) grant Ice spells
Anemochoric plants (Dandelions, Samaras, etc) grant Solar spells
Root vegetables (potatoes, radishes, carrots, etc) grant Earth spells
Caffeine bearing plants (Coffee, Tea, Cocoa, etc) grant Lightning spells
Psychoactive plants (Cannabis, Tobacco, opium, etc) grant Lunar spells
Aquatic plants (Rice, Lotus', etc) grant Water spells

There's a legend about a Zalavan who was able to cultivate apples and gained ultimate power.
