Taroot

ferus tinous aelstic | closed species

Taroots are born from a smaller species called the tion due to an influx of magic during gestation. They have a canine body frame, skulls as heads, and can often have strong genetic magic capabilities. Taroots as a species and how they are born is quite a mystery to Ptithians still. Due to their rarity, their place in society is often questionable and many never leave the wilderness they grew up in.

History

Taroots have limited history. Because of their population entirely relying on random chance, their species members are few and social connections are rare. Only a few hundred years ago did taroots begin to sneak into the cities, before then, the only records were tion owners killing "diseased" pups from their pet's litter or taxonomists labeling taroots as a wild "alpha tion". They were unwanted by breeders and viewed as a threatning carnivore in the wild.

Over time, taroots followed their curiosity into settlements, where they often killed because they stole food scraps or ate pets. Their intelligence was not discovered until a scientist caged up a taroot found in Bivnix. A pup of a domestic tion, the breeder had chosen to let it live and the taroot learned to speak from the owner. For whatever reason, the breeder kept their "speaking tion" a secret, until it escaped one night chasing animals. The scientist captured the taroot believing it was an "alpha tion" and wanted a chance to take notes on it before they put it back into the forest.

Word spread quickly of the scientist's publishing about the extra-large, talking tion they had captured. Many Zuannians came to see the mysterious tion, believing it was a well-trained creature with a spell of translation perhaps, but what many found horrified them.

Not the taroot, it did not frighten them, but its treatment. If this creature could speak, it could hold a conversation, it cried and said it wanted to go home to its mommy. It had complex emotions and seethed in cowardice with so many eyes on it everyday. By the decision of many, it was let free and it returned to whatever home it came from- but this was only the beginning.

Still confused on how to classify the creature, it was renamed to "tinous aelstic" - "the taroot", meaning "tion with aura". With how fast news spread, curious taroots spotted in settlements and cities were no longer killed or relocated. Many kind individuals ushered them into their homes to share food and conversations, but they soon realized that wild ones did not know how to speak.

Planned education began. Any from domestic litters were taught the basics by the owner or sent away to the nearest school to handle. However, had news not reached an area or the owner did not care, taroots were often still killed early on.

Educating the few taroots from domestics was easy, they were truly intelligent creatures that deserved a place in society. But the wild ones were a complex matter. It was decided that wild taroots were intelligent enough to make their own decisions. If one comes into a town, it can choose to stay or leave. Taroots that stayed in settlements usually learned basic speech and morals on their own, just by observing and listening.

Taroots are still a rare species to see, but they are recognized by law in all territories as "people" and must be respected as such. Only in uncontrolled areas do taroot views vary. For they are a byproduct of wild aura, not a Cardinal, are they really "people" and not an estranged feral animal?

Abilities

Aura

Taroots are naturally average-aura creatures because they are born from an excess of magic, from a creature of low-aura, resulting commonly in a child of middle powered magic. However, since taroots are not born from a family-line that can pass down a source of genetic magic, they do not have a genetic magic that their average-aura could make use of. Because of this amount of aura but lack of genetic magic taking up "space", many taroots are able to learn a type of magic by choice. These magic types can only be as powerful as a genetic magic would be, such as an element control or a breath ability. Taroots are sometimes born with the same amount of aura as their mother due to the excess magic not sticking around after birth, making them low-aura. On very rare occasions, like other sapient species, they can have high-aura. High-aura taroots are capable of learning new magic, spells, and runecasting.

Sonic Scream

Taroots can emit a scream that pieces eardrums if a victim is too close. They save it for when they feel their life is threatened as it can render them with voice-loss temporarily. They use both their vocals and whistling at peak volume in order to make this sound, making use of the extreme high pitches their slits can accomplish.

Tracking

They are excellent at tracking smells. Like tions, taroots retain their brilliant noses and can track down scents or other creatures for kilometers.

Pack/Whistle Slits

Using the extra slits behind their nose, called "whistle slits" or "pack slits", taroots are able to communicate perfectly with their tion pack and are able to command them most of the time. The can also speak to other taroots in the same way, which has created a simple language they call "Dreolic" that no other creatures can understand.

Appearance

"Altalune" by Wallvie.

  • Taroots can have a range of different body types, but often their physique depends on their pack's native enviorments; as desert tions are usually thin compared to arctic-furred tions, thus the same environmental differences affect a taroot as well. A taroot's skin is leathery and doesn't sweat. it often comes in a slightly darker color than what their main coat color is. it is tough and chewy, able to take many scratches but cannot handle blunt force well. Because they do not sweat, they pant to release heat.
  • Like the tion, a taroot's feet have sharp claws and are semi-scaled. there is no fur on their feet (except artic coats), their talons are curved, and dense padding lies underneath to protect them from cold, heat, and parasites. For arctic coated taroots who have furred feet, the scale pattern faintly shows atop their fur in the same area.
  • Unlike the tion, a taroot has eye sockets. These eyes are almond shaped, hollow, and sometimes have glowing pupils of varying appearances floating within them. Behind the possible pupils are an infinite darkness. The oldest taroots tend to have "the universe in their eyes", meaning star patterns exist in the darkness.
  • A taroot's nose is chipped sharply at the end, followed by two more slits directly behind the nose that serve as the whistling slits for the taroot to use for communication with its tion family.
  • Sharp, canine teeth line the front areas of the jaw, but in the back lie pin-cushion teeth. these needle teeth in the back are for puncturing through the bodies of small animals it consumes whole. A quick, angled bite will stab through two vital organs at once of the small prey in its mouth. A taroot bite is very easy to identify.
  • Most taroots do not have visible ears, as they are often just small holes near the back edges of their skulls, hidden by long fur. However, some taroots have outer ears, such as little round ones or larger fluffy wolf-like ones, this detail is rare.

Trivia

  • Their scientific name can be broken down into two parts, as their existence amongst other species is odd even to aura-based evolutionary laws. "ferus tinous" is the first part to "ferus tinous domesticus", which is the average feral or tamed tion, whereas "aelstic" means "of magic and aura".
  • While taroots are uncommon in general, alpha-skulls are even rare. Alpha-skulls have sharper, spear-head skulls and four eye-sockets. They are almost always taller than the average taroot too. These alpha-skulls are respected as strong leaders, all tions and other taroots follow their commands if they are around.
  • Taroots survive best in the environment where they were born but can withstand warm, temperate, and mildly cold temperatures. Taroots that came from arctic tions are usually comfortable in colder places, taroots born from forest tions in temperate, and those born from desert tions obviously are better suited to warmer zones. However, they are intelligent enough to make or buy clothing to handle colder places if they are not accustomed to it.
  • Clothing and accessories depend on where they live and their culture. Taroots can adorn themselves in whatever they want. like other sapient species, clothing is used to withstand weather and to look beautiful in the eyes of others. taroots can wear jewelry, accessories, fabrics, piercings, and can use body paint too.

Jessels are thin, long-legged canine-resembling creatures that hunt in the dry savannahs and southeast forests. They are a member of the tion animal family.

In extremely rare situations, jessel-taroots can be born via the same reasons normal taroots are born.

Jessel-taroots are generally the same as tion-taroots besides their appearance.

Some taroots are born with appearance traits that are specific to only a few. While taroots are uncommon in general, alpha-skulls are even rarer within that small percentage. Alpha-skulls have sharper, spear-head skulls and four eye-sockets. They are almost always taller than the average taroot too. These alpha-skulls are respected as strong leaders, all taroots and tions obey if they are around.

Alpha-skulls tend to have a lot more visible bone compared to typical taroots. Usually with boney feet and an external ribcage with spiked vertebrae.

Alpha-skulls can only be born from tions. Taroot parents cannot produce an alpha-skull. Alpha-skulls can breed with normal taroots but the alpha-skull features will not pass on.

Alpha-skulls are born with the ability to communicate with all animals.

Child Development

Tion gestation (5-6 months) ➜ tion mothers usually gestate for 5 to 6 months befire giving birth to 5-7 pups.

Newborn (birth to 1 month ) ➜ newborn taroots resemble newborn tions, they cannot be told apart. They must have a diet of mother's milk only and have to be kept warm alongside their tion siblings. Their fur is a layer of short fuzz and their skull is a blank slate with no eyes or nostrils.

Pup ( at 3 months ) ➜ taroot pups still heavily resemble their tion siblings. Their fur is nice and fluffy, their tail is short, their claws are very dull, but their skulls show minor changes. Unlike the tions whose head's nostril hole is opening up, the taroot has such but also small holes forming where their eyes will be. Taroot pups are playful and fit right in with the tion siblings at this stage.

Adolescent ( at 1 year ) ➜ adolescent taroots are now showing signs of being different. Their skulls have eyes, more nostril slits, and they are much taller and lankier than their siblings. They have developed enough to begin realizing their differences on their own, but this takes time and their brain develops slower than their body.

Discovery ( at 2 years ) ➜ Their thoughts have caught up to them. They can now learn communication skills and problem solving. Their skulls are sharp, any eye traits now show, and they can choose their own path in life.

Taroot gestation (8-10 months) ➜ taroot mothers usually gestate for 8 to 10 months before giving birth to 1-2 pups.

Newborn (birth to 1 month) ➜ the newborn looks the same to those born to tion mothers: short fuzz and no signs of being anything besides an average tion.

Pup ( at 5 months ) ➜ pups born to taroot mothers take longer to develop, the reason is currently unknown. They still resemble pups born to tions, with only small holes where their eyes will open to prove they will become a taroot. It is evident the taroot pup requires siblings at this stage to be happy, but due to taroots not producing large litters like tions, this does not happen. A good taroot parent will find a way to fix this, such as bringing their pup to a family friend who has a tion with puppies the child could be around and play with. Taroot pups will not get along with other species children at a similar age stage.

Adolescent ( at 1.5 years ) ➜ adolescent taroots raised by taroots have a different world perception at a young age compared to ones surrounded by tions. They are schooled like other species, they learn the same things and are treated like fellow Ptithians. Their minds are at weight with their body at an earlier time and they are able to adapt to life outside of packs much easier. Although a developed adult at 2 years, taroots adjusted to town or city life remain in education plans at a normal rate with other species children (if they choose to do so).
