History

Dragons were the first of the Cardinals' kin species. Three varieties were born from the powerful claws of Edenlline, Cymer, and Meldr'uno. In 0005 E.D. Era, the first of each dragon type was created as a kin to their unique Cardinal. In the West, Cymer created the western dragons, in the North, Edenlline created wyverns, and in the East, Meldr'uno created the eastern dragons.

The western dragons served Cymer, their history began in the jungles of the west where their great kingdom of Sequ'Manko was headed by the Cardinal Himself. Sequ'Manko was a vast land full of prosperity, and the western dragons dominated advancement throughout much of the early, early years of kin development.

The wyverns served Edenlline and Swā, mainly Edenlline, their history began in the forests deep within the Aurix Caesin (the Honeycomb Forest), where the towering kingdom of Chaveri formed to protect them from the dangerous wilderness. Edenlline kept Her wyverns squared away, not wanting the dragons of the Her brethren to interfere with her beautifully unique kin, but no matter how much she smothered them, the wyverns found out about the west and the east and grew jealous that the west had spare hands and the east got flight without effort. The wyverns argued about their short end of the stick, telling Edenlline that if She was their great Cardinal, then why did they look like Her "assistant" Swā. Edenlline could not answer them. It was her stubbornness that caused their anger, for she wanted something different from Cymer because she disliked him so, thus she had to create something else. This would not be enough it seemed, as Her wyverns bored her eventually and she introduced western-type dragons into her breadth of kin a few decades later. This stubbornness would not leave easily, no, it would reappear twice more after this.

The eastern dragons served Meldr'uno, their history began in the steppe near the Twincub Mountains, where the expansive kingdom on Tucruitora was created to show the strength of Meldr'uno and His kin. The eastern dragons were rumored to be the greatest aura wielders in the past, their development relied on it and interference from their Cardinal unlike the other kin. The eastern dragons did not have wings, so the kin as a whole was blessed by the East Cardinal to fly on demand with the use of aura rather than wings. The eastern dragons built up most of Tucruitora during their time under Meldr'uno's watchful eyes. The easterns felt great pride to be the kin of Meldr'uno, but He betrayed their trust, just as they unknowingly betrayed his ideals.

Within the 200 - 1000s' of the E.D. Era, the main cultures and Affiliations of the growing world had developed, meaning the hard work of creating identities and traditions that the Cardinals needed their kin close by for were complete. The outside world had no boundaries, and these dragons (and gryphons) felt inclined to explore the unknown. The drive to see something new was strong to many, the rest of the world was at their fingertips. Cultures and species intermingled and smaller settlements were founded outside of the center three kingdoms, making places where cultures and identities mixed, dragons mixed, the various different types of dragons seen on Ptitheros today mostly came about first during these centuries of exploration and new foundation.

Cymer and Edenlline were content with the exploration and mixing. Cymer never had an issue with His kin leaving to explore their own curiosities and Edenlline now had the gryphons to curb her stubborn need to be special amongst the Cardinals. But the Melder, He did not like it. Ola'mels (easterns) were dragons no matter the title he set for them, and despite Meldr'uno's firm grasp over their culture and ideals, they continued to drift further from what He desired from them. They became curious and mingled beyond the territories that were gifted to them, and eventually the East Cardinal realized it was no longer worth his time to try and wrangle these drifting creatures back into his static reign. He wanted a kin all under his word, none curious to learn about the dragons to the west or the clever gryphons to the north, thus the easterns became something unwanted, and so they were discarded and set free in 1150~ E.D. This was not a good form of freedom, for now the eastern dragons once aided and protected by the East God Himself were alone in the world with no means of holding onto their culture and magic. Thanks to the other Cardinals interfering with Meldr'uno's rage, the eastern dragons were able to keep their magic and sapience, but all else was left to them to protect, resulting in the Ola'mel culture slowly becoming rare. Ola'mels are viewed by other Affiliations as Ptithians that need help, need a savior, because they were betrayed by a Cardinal. The Ola'mels of the present day dislike the savior complex they must deal with and often keep their culture under privacy measures.

During these centuries of exploration and new settlements, the South Cardinal, Swā Veduro, left Edenlline's kingdom, left Their placement as "assistant" and fled to the southern coastline that is now Chaarm Bay. They took great interest in one of the dragon types that were slightly more common in the small settlements across the blue-forested region, a type soon coined the "south dragon". They took the type in as Their new kin, made plenty more, and founded a territory of Their own so They could be more like Their brethren. The Swavvel Affiliation amongst dragons (and some gryphons) was created in 0800 E.D.

2800 E.D. was a dark year for the dragons of the North, in Chaveri. Gryphons felt disrespected by the dragons of the kingdom and felt they were treated as unequal by them and Edenlline. A civil war broke out between the species, but it did not last long once the North Cardinal interfered. Many gryphons left to go farther northward to get out of the kingdom and dragons were sour towards Edenlline for the following years. This prompted many dragons to seek home and kindness elsewhere, causing a mass change in Affiliation from Sagekin to Swavvel or Sequn for the next couple decades. This made Edenlline jealous and angry, so she once more made another kin that would respect her more (the rubasyns). This did not help to make gryphons come back to Chaveri or make the lost dragons return to Her Affiliation.

approaching the present

Beyond this, most history that involves dragons is intermixed with the history of the other Ptitheros species or is not the direct influence of dragons. Dragons continue to flourish in Ptitheros and are one of the most diverse species when it comes to appearances, even capable of looking like beasts that are far, far from the basic medieval book description of a dragon. There is no place on present-day Ptitheros where a dragon cannot be found.

Abilities

Aura

Dragons are naturally average-aura creatures. Their average-aura can be seen as their genetic magic, in which they have one magic ability type passed down in their lineage. Having a major genetic magic and a minor magic is also common.

Flight

They can fly using their wings. Depending on their wing shape they can excel in agility, speed, or endurance in the air, sometimes they can excel in more than one. Eastern dragons (long-bodied) often have a blessed gift called Aura Flight, which allows them to fly without any wings.

Appearance

"Urchin" by SacredNanners.

  • Dragons come in a large variety of appearances. They can appear like classical European fantasy dragons to mythical Chinese mythology dragons, feathered wyverns that look like birds to serpentine beasts with venomous fangs, and of course, all things in between! This wide variety of body shapes means dragons can have wild features like multiple wings to multiple limbs, to no wings at all.
  • They can have scales, skin, fur, feathers, and mixtures of each all across their body.
  • However, with all this freedom to their appearances come features that are present on all dragons no matter their bloodlines or mutations, and those include having functional front hands (with thumbs), wing paws, sharp front teeth with flat back teeth, and highly saturated coats are extremely rare.
  • They also cannot look too alien, so far removed from looking like a dragon, these appearances would not be permitted. Dragons can have features that overlap other species even without having a decent amount of other-species heritage in them, such as a mammalian + feathered wing appearance that somewhat matches a lefiká.

Trivia

  • Dragons can live anywhere, it all depends on the environment they are most comfortable in and what kingdom they want to be a part of (or no kingdom as well). Dragons can also adapt to new environments or use clothing or items that allow them to comfortably live somewhere more dangerous to them, such as a gryphon from the Meldra Desert wearing lots of warm clothes so they can live in Kilaan city. Dragons are known to be the most adaptable of the species, often able to live in multiple different climates without much difficulty.
  • Clothing and accessories depend on where they live and their culture. Dragons can adorn themselves in whatever they want.

wyrm-like, small creatures that are a "failed species of dragon" from long before the Cardinals created the current races. Evolution couldn’t do what the Cardinals could do so the pathetic wyrm creature never got anywhere.

Child Development

Egg ( 6-8 months) ➜ Gestation and egg incubation times vary per dragon. Most are developed, laid, and hatched between 6 to 8 months, some a few weeks longer. Female dragons usually lay a clutch of 1-3 eggs.
Mammalian ( 8-10 month ) ➜ Gestation for mammal dragons usually lasts 8 to 10 months. Female dragons usually give birth to 1-3 cubs/hatchlings.

Newborn (birth to 3 months) ➜ newborn/freshly hatched dragons are soft skinned, have dulled talons, closed eyes, and undeveloped wrinkled wings. Eastern dragons in particular have short bodies like a western dragon at this age. Newborns are on a diet of mushed food or mother's milk and must be kept in a warm environment.

Hatchling/Cub ( at 2 years ) ➜ Dragon children at this stage don't have anything sharp, but their wings are small and flapping, their teeth have come in, their wide eyes are open, and they are curious about everything. Parents need to keep an eye on them in case they jump off things attempting to fly.

Pouncer ( at 11 years ) ➜ dragons at this stage have developed their wings enough to glide or go short distances. They now have a decent set of horns or spikes to show and their body is abnormally long and naturally lithe (not all) to account for growth spurts and wing stretching. Their scales/fur/hide has gotten strong enough for them to defend themselves or fight.

Adolescent ( 14 to 25 years ) ➜ Adolescent dragons learn to fly, use their genetic magic capabilities, how to care for themselves, and any other necessities.
