Personality

Zal wants to help make a difference, he really does - but all this work for such an impossible goal? Really? Zal considers rest to be one of the most important things in life, and is happiest when he's taking a nap somewhere warm. When he has to fight, he fights bravely, a whirlwind of danger and fury, and is careful to protect all the others in the Regiment, but if there's no pressing need for him to assist with things, he's going to wander off and sleep somewhere. It's mostly his daughter that brought the two of them to this group - she wants to be so much, and he's happy for her, following her dreams.

Zal, however, has no big dreams outside staying safe and making sure others do, as well. He's an easily pleased lion, and doesn't want for much. Life is good, he says, and so far, things are staying good.

History

Zal has been feeling pretty down, after his wife died in childbirth. He's been doing his best to take care of his dear daughter Calypso ever since, but it's hard most days. This is a lion who spent so much time running from his sadness that he hasn't truly gotten over it. He's gotten good at putting up a front, instead, and convincing everyone else he's doing okay.

He and Cal have wandered the lands of Starheart for many a year, and have helped out in exchange for food and board wherever they end up going. It's been alright, not having many responsibilities - though nowadays he has far more of them. It wasn't his idea, coming to the ruins to help this Brontes figure fight monsters. No, that was all his brave, brilliant daughter, who brought him the news that a lion was asking for help in a grand fight, and insisted that they both go to see what was going on.

Zal couldn't convince himself to say no. What was a little detour on their adventures, after all? But then they stuck around, and the old lion started gaining attachments to some of the others in the group. ...They might be here to stay.

Rank

Zal is a duelist - essentially, a basic fighter for the group, though one who is considered responsible enough not to be in training any longer. He isn't a lion with huge ambitions, and didn't really come along of his own volition - his daughter suggested that they make their way to the Regiment, so he followed her gladly. Brontes simply saw Zal as a capable man, and chose to make him a Duelist. Good with Zal. Let others lead the fight, and let others fight to improve themselves constantly - this lion is happy where he is and doesn't seek to reach any higher.

Is that a problem? He supposes it could be, a little bit. But it just doesn't matter to him. He's a part of this fight, and when he's called to fight, he shall. In the end, though, Zal happily returns to the warm sun of the cliffs, and the knowledge that friends are near. Calypso convinces him to practice duel with her when he's awake, and at night he'll look up to the sky and hope that he's doing enough to make his late wife proud. Life goes on, and Zal fights as well as he can, for all that he has lost.
