Hugo is a Pulcher whose main occupation is an undertaker whose main job is to dig the holes for the dead to go into. He isn't particularly good at his job, but he isn't bad either, most would say he gets the job done. He isn't ever one to really start a conversation, but if talked to will do a decent job keeping one up. When situations get tense or others get upset, he tends to crack inappropriate jokes about death or social taboos. He will never correct others for mixing up his subspecies and instead will just go along with it.

Hugo's father’s occupation is that of a traveling sales Serpentes, and he sometimes uses the fact that he looks similar to a Coral to sell his wears. As Hugo grew up, he would watch how others treated his father differently depending on what subspecies he said he belonged to, and their actions sickened him almost as much as watching his father take advantage of others' naivety sickened him. He couldn't understand why Animalian would treat each other differently based on stripe color and location.

He never said a word about his misgivings to his father, but he would vent to his mother from time to time about it. Her reply would always be that he should be grateful that his father was able to make enough sides to feed them. As he got older, he started to have comebacks for his mother's replies, with his most popular one being 'why doesn't he find a different job then?". Most days, she ignored his comments as she didn't have a good response.

Eventually, when Hugo became old enough to venture out on his own, his mother finally had a comeback for him. "well, why don't you go get a job of your own then and see how hard it is." She had even lined him up with one. The position was that of a gravedigger. She found this job expecting that he would try it, give up and come back home. However, he fell in love with it.

As Hugo mostly worked with dead Animalian, no one was there to make assumptions or treat him differently depending on his stripes. It is true that he had to work with living Animalian from time to time, but as long as it wasn't daily, he could handle it. For the most part, his boss Baird took care of the visitors and customers, allowing Hugo to do his job with minimal forced interactions.

During the long hours that Hugo digs up the hard earth, sometimes Baird will stop by to lend a hand or keep Hugo company (even though Hugo claims he doesn't need it). The two use their noses to help quickly dig as they exchange jokes. It's joking around at times like this where Hugo has got his odd sense of humor from, as most of the jokes he was told by Baird have to do with death and would be considered quite inappropriate for most Animalian who don't have to deal with the dead on a daily basis.

Sometimes after a few hours of small talk and jokes, the two will actually take some time to talk a bit about life and how things are going. To Hugo, Baird seems a lot more like a parent than his birth parents ever really were, and although Hugo was gated about his thoughts and opinions around Baird when he first started working for him, after a number of years of getting to know his boss, he now shares his deepest wishes, dreams, and opinions with the Serpentes.

Baird has offered many times to bring Hugo to his house for things such as food or to get 'cleaned up', but Hugo always turns him down. He likes his boss a lot, but always feels like if he were to accept, he would be acting like his birth dad and taking advantage of his boss.Because of this, he chooses to take a bath in the morgue and has a room in its basement where he pays Baird to live (despite Baird saying multiple times that 'no one should have to pay to sleep next to the dead'). He doesn't mind that dead Animalian are in the room next to him, he has to deal with them every day, and for him they feel more like an expensive vase that you need to be careful working with and respect, but they aren't anything to be scared of or avoid.

When he is forced to interact with others, such as having to dig graves with someone (other than Baird) or when he has to go out shopping for food, he will rarely correct anyone that makes a wrong assumption about his subspecies. (see
Pulcher legend for more info on this common mess up) To him, if they are foolish enough to assume something wrong about him, then that's their problem, not his. He will rarely feed into their mistaken identity and just continue the conversation as if it wasn't ever brought up, but if he gets really irritated by things such as them trying to treat him differently because he is a 'high nvoem' or 'of coral decent' he may push into them asking things like ' oh, so you think you should treat me different because my bite could kill you? Don't you know there are 100 other more likely ways to die that you really shouldn't have to worry about my bite, and more should be afraid of accidentally stepping in front of a train. It's a lot more likely to happen, you know.'

Overall, Hugo is much happier ever since he left his family. He likes his job and has a good friend in Baird who looks after him. He has no wish to find his mom and dad and hopes that one day his dad's misdeeds will catch up with him. The only time he would ever want to see him again is behind bars or being sent to the gallows.

1)If a PC (player character) wishes to play as Hugo on their adventure, his call to adventure could consist of someone offering to pay him a lot of money to get them into somewhere based on his prestige(them assuming that he is a Coral). Not willing to correct them and needing some extra cash to help Baird out with something, he takes them up on the offer. However, everything goes to crap as eventually he is found out and after an argument with the adventures that asked for his help where he states ' i never SAID I was a Coral,' he is forced to go on the run with them till things cool down.

2) Alternitively, he could be doing his job when he finds that he has to bury his mom. No one is sure how she died, and his father is nowhere to be found. Needing to know what happened (and possibly suspecting his dad of killing her) he joins a group of adventures to help him travel around safely with his eyes peeled out of his father in every town they go to.

If no call to adventure is heeded Hugo will spend most of his life as a grave digger going out into the world every now and then to get a break only to be reminded that everyone around him can't tell the difference between him and some hoi polloi Coral causing him to return more stressed and upset then when he left. When his boss Baird retires from his job a much younger woman is put in charge of the mortuary. At first he does not like her at all, but eventually, the two spend time together and grow close and they eventually get married. She runs the mortuary and he is head over the new hires.

Ideas for what you could draw him doing:
-digging a grave at night either with his nose or a shovel

-covered in dirt, talking to Baird as they sit at the side of a half-dug grave
- sleeping/ taking a shower in the mortuary
-ignoring people's remarks about his supposed 'heritage'
-trying to ignore people as he goes out shopping for food
-digging a grave as other workers are eating/ taking a break
-laying inside a empty grave, looking up at the stars
-telling jokes with Baird
-telling an inappropriate joke about death
-eating a meal on the same table as a dead(covered) corpse
-Threatening to use a shovel to defend himself against people that won't leave him alone
-preparing a body for burial

song about how he thinks there are a lot more things to worry about than a bite from a high Nvoem and you really shouldn't be worried about his potential lethal bite.
