Iso's OC Question of the Day

Posted 8 years, 4 months ago (Edited 6 years, 10 months ago) by Isoprene

Listen, there's nothing I love more than answering random questions about my OCs and seeing other people answer random questions about their OCs. Conveniently, I also love coming up with random questions and asking them. So, hey, why not make it a daily event? In this thread I'll post a question every day, all of them related to OCs! Sometimes it'll be about your feelings about your OCs ("who's your favorite oc?" or "who was your first oc?") and sometimes it'll be questions asked toward your OCs themselves ("what are your ocs' favorite colors?" or "would your ocs rather fight one horse-sized duck or 100 duck-sized horses?"). You can answer in-character or out of character, answer for multiple characters or just one, whatever you want!

I'll try to ask these early in the day, and you're always welcome to answer any ones that you've missed! Feel free to answer as many as you want at once; just be sure to label which question you're answering! I also have a huge list of questions waiting in the wings, but if you have any questions you'd like to see asked feel free to message me and I'll credit and ping you if I end up using your question!

In affiliation with necessaryocthings, run by reinapepiada!

Q1. Who was the first OC you made a profile for on Toyhouse? Why them?

The first OC I made a profile for here was Dicro Corrune! He's the most well-known OC of mine amongst my friends (most of my friends don't have a lot of profiles up yet but he'd have the most links), is probably my most important character overall even though I have like 50 different OC universes and he's only connected to a few, and if he's not my favorite OC overall he's pretty darn close. There's a lot of me in him, too, so I feel like putting him up first provides a decent insight into both the kind of person I am and the kind of characters you'll probably see from me. Plus he has the most images, the most writing, is the most fun to RP with, and is one of my oldest active OCs... it was an obvious choice for me!

Q46. Which of yours OCs' looks are the most deceiving?

I guess in the literal sense Iskalon and Ishra they are all shapeshifters and both shapeshift into considerably attractive humanoids which come off as much nicer than they actually are. But in their shapeshifter forms they are pretty deceiving when they actually are borderline hideous beasts. But even in their normal form most probably wouldn't guess they are pretty sexual and horny.

Q47. Which of your OCs have the most regrets?

Carter, for sure. After his wife's death he couldn't control himself and regrets not spending enough time with her and not finding a way to delay the inevitable. After his drinking habit became more severe he regretted leaving his son, Griffin, to deal with all his work and blames himself for Griffin's fast maturity. He regrets all the times he's cheated, and regrets remarrying; and even though he loves all his children, regrets making them have to have such a terrible father.

Waltz

Q45. Are any of your OCs dead, planned to die, or have been dead at any point (even if only briefly)?

Oh boy, Arrans has been dead more times than anyone can count, but unfortunately for him, it never sticks. His ultimate goal is to stay dead for once, but due to a complex set of circumstances that's currently impossible. He spends a lot of time thinking of ways he can end his own life or otherwise shed his mortal form, but for now he's bound to life, until he can find someone else to end him. Deals with devils are a hell of a thing.

My unnamed zombie girl is, well, a zombie, so she's in a fairly liminal state of life and death. Similarly, my knight Warren, depending on the universe, is undead.

The death of this unnamed girl is actually the crux of her story, but that's still in planning, so I don't have a great deal of details to share on it yet. Raleigh, in the original draft of the story he's part of, was slated to be killed by public execution after he murdered a man in the defense of someone he cares deeply about, but if I ever revisit the story that may change. Many of the others in his same storyverse are deceased by the time of a story set some 45 years later in the same place, due to various causes. Many of my demon characters are slated to die eventually, but that as well is mostly a case of old age and an extended timeline.

Q46. Which of yours OC's looks are the most deceiving?

Many of my characters' looks actually fit their personalities rather well, but let's see...

Kiri, who I don't yet have many pictures up yet of, is a very small and frail-looking child, but she's also a skilled assassin and incredibly dangerous to be around. Santi, similarly, is incredibly elegant in appearance, but in reality she is intensely ruthless and violent. She gives no quarter to anyone who opposes her ideals, and is ready to put her spear through the heart of anyone who would even dare to speak ill of her Goddess. She has the grace of a butterfly and the temper of a wolverine. AKINO-75 is a small and rather cute android with the power to destroy the entire universe. Estarath is a fearsome red dragon in the body of a tiny girl.

Ori's appearance is actually one that is misunderstood on a societal level. Amongst most people, his race is considered dangerous and violent, because they live isolated from mainstream society, and are primarily carnivorous, which is unusual among the races in their country. Ori himself is large and intimidating, and carries himself with an aggressive air, partly because of the way he's been treated and partly because he's just incredibly anti-social to begin with. In reality, he is sweet and kind, and incredibly gentle. He's unused to kindness, but those who are kind to him will have the favour returned ten-fold. His hands are large and strong, and could easily crush most things, but he spends his time making handicrafts, and keeps small animals as pets. Once you get past his brusque shell, he is a quintessential gentle giant.

Q47. Which of your OCs have the most regrets?

A lot of my OCs have various regrets, but Vanik is probably the king. He's done more things in his life that he regrets than most, primarily because these things have often backfired on him spectacularly. When he was young he often bullied his weaker twin brother mercilessly, but when his brother got much older and stronger, he came back to exact his revenge. Later, Vanik was quite cruel to and drove away someone who would prove to be his only friend, and found himself utterly alone, which lead him down a path to the apprenticeship of a very bad man; the experience would scar him deeply. After that, he did something greatly irresponsible, which cost him the life of his first-born son. His life is a series of regretful things and tragedies caused by his own folly, which he doesn't manage to acknowledge until very late in his life.

Tilia regrets that she could not do more to prevent the downfall of the kingdom and court she once served. She was sent away before her liege was murdered, and every day she regrets that she wasn't there to protect her. Koss and Mirko, in very different worlds and times, regret that they were not alive during a time when the world was more alive and thriving, but being that there's nothing they can do about it, they've both learned to live their lives. Mirko also regrets that he was unable to save his older brother from a brutal death, when they were very young. And of course there is Arrans above, whose unfortunately made pact has caused him a regret that spans centuries.

Q46. Which of yours OCs' looks are the most deceiving?

I think... I want to say Bix. She generally looks like a young girl (certainly younger than her actual age) and appears to be very cute, bubbly, and playful. Certainly she can behave that way, but most people don't realize she also has a very different persona--that of a fierce assassin/bounty hunter who lives for the thrill of the hunt. Once she gets in "the zone" and is on the hunt for her next target, she becomes very serious, mature, and coldly focused on getting the kill. She doesn't make clean kills, either--she likes to disarm her opponents, get into hand-to-hand combat, and then finish off the opponent with her claws or fangs. It's a startling side that few people know about, and even more surprising is the fact that Bix often prefers to be in this deadly persona, as she feels people don't take her seriously when she's trying to be friendly and normal.

A runner up would probably be Tiffie, my gnome warlock. She's sweet and friendly enough at first, but her preferred school of magical study is that of the dark arts. She delights in enslaving demons to her will, casting curses, and generally seeing how much demonic power she can exert without being consumed by it. She doesn't mind being called "cute," but people who treat her like a "little girl" will definitely incur her wrath and pay for it in the end.

Q47. Which of your OCs have the most regrets?

Alexander would like to claim that he does, but he tends to dwell far too much on his past mistakes. It's possible he exaggerates how awful his problems are, even to himself. (Not to say that he doesn't have legitimate, serious issues going on in his life, but his primary problem is that he doesn't really attempt to move on from them. :P )

So ignoring him... I'm going to say Carl probably has the most regrets about what he's done with his life. He feels in his heart he made the best decisions he could, but it's easy to make him self-conscious and second-guess himself. He regrets not living up to his family's expectations (even though his parents were both emotionally abusive to him), fighting with his brother and being estranged from him for so many years (though they do eventually reconcile), "imposing" himself on Kip and moving in with her (even though she is fully fine with it, and cares about him very much), and finally... falling for Kip in the first place. He loves her, but he often gets jealous of her being open to relationships with other people, and then he feels like he's just a clingy burden for feeling this way. (They aren't officially in a relationship, so Carl doesn't think he has the right to tell her what to do, but it still bothers him. He also refuses to tell her how he feels, so Kip is unaware of how much it bothers him.)

It's definitely complicated between them. Though I feel like if he just shared his feelings and the two talked things out, then so many of his regrets and problems would be solved. xD

Q48. Do you have any OCs who have radically changed from their original concept?

This question is specifically in terms of things like personality, backstory, and role as opposed to their appearance/design! spoilers: that's tomorrow's question

hoo boy goodness yes

Bonnie was originally some cynical, sarcastic, and kind of cold guy who only worked for Zhirael because he accidentally sold his soul to him by not reading the terms & conditions for some cheap smartphone game. Zhirael was also more of a traditional Evil Demon kind of guy, who only really cared about himself and getting souls (and eyes) in new and exciting ways. As I started developing Asthenopia's plot, both of them (and the other characters, for that matter... but none of them are uploaded here yet rip) changed considerably, pretty much doing 180s. Now Bonnie is an upbeat, sociable, and very casual piece of meme trash who started working for Zhirael because he needed a job and, well, there was an ad on Craigslist. Zhirael became incredibly interested in humans and other mortal beings, and as I worked Heaven into the picture Zhirael's goal became to overthrow it for the greater good. also he and bonnie are Really Really Gay for each other now

Laejizhar used to be far more interested in just eating random people and he was pretty jolly about it! The first time I RPed with him he shared a dead body with a bunch of soul-eating entities in a dark alley before they all got attacked by a pasta-controlling wizard, the second time he was trying to solve the mystery of a mass suicide, and the third time he was really uncomfortable being around a bunch of people who were pretty much exactly the same as his original concept and read a book about some guy choking on corn dogs. Good times, all of those.

Lausac hasn't changed too drastically, but he's still worth noting. He used to be way more of an asshole and way less sympathetic, but like I tend to do with most of my Terrible Person characters I accidentally wound up making him a perfectly decent person who's just kind of a dick sometimes. Whoops? He also used to have this weird fixation on Flann where he'd do everything possible to bother her, including taking interns on panty raids to the point where she got a giant robot to guard her room. Early SYOL was... really weird. There was some in-universe explanation at some point where Hadris told Lausac to bother her in the first place to help her gain control over her powers (which are triggered by anger), but that kind of made no sense at all and wound up being out of character for everyone and it was all just kinda weird in general. So I always find it kind of funny how pretty much all of my writing about SYOL (haven't really written anything in that 'verse aside from two short stories that didn't involve Lausac or Flann) and most of my old RP threads involve Flann having this vitriolic hatred toward Lausac that he just basked in, but now they're just co-workers who get along perfectly fine. They're both even part of an OT3 with one of my friend's characters!

Monaz was suuuuper different in xyr original concept: xe used to be some human-looking red dude named Almandine who was on the run from the Space Police for breaking the law pretty much constantly. He was a huge, smug jerk who liked to cause trouble and moved into the soul of some girl named Chrysoprase. I'm... not really sure when things changed, but I looked up more rock names, made some DreamSelfies, and suddenly the cast of the story was completely different, names got shuffled around (the name Almandine went to Alma here), and everyone's personalities changed drastically. Somehow Monaz became some kind of gentle energy being alien who was involved with Hadris at some point and wouldn't hurt a fly. Somehow.

As mentioned in Q46, Seraye's personality kind of matched her looks. She was just a soft-spoken (I even wrote her speech in small text), delicate, and gentle woman who gave away cute dolls for free. Though I'm pretty sure in either her first or second thread she hit a murderous reality-bender over the head with her bat... but that was with a kind smile instead of a lot of angry swearing, so hey whatever y'know still different

Umbra originally was exactly what she pretends to be and so much more - a straight-up evil villain who just wanted to kill. As time went on and I RPed with her more, I started developing her character and wound up making that a facade; someone had to be the bad guy for the sake of uniting everyone else to tl;dr save the world, and Umbra bravely decided that it would be her. It was a lot of fun when I got to reveal her real motivations and radically changed how everyone else saw her IC and OOC... even though that was back in, like, 2008, it's still one of my favorite moments out of my entire RP career and probably like... the third biggest twist (the second being a few years later when it turned out her Basically-Daughter was actually a higher being all along and the first being something I haven't revealed yet). Half of the "Good Guys" switched sides (which was hilarious because in one case one of the Good Guys was mortal enemies with someone in Umbra's group so they just kind of had to... awkwardly tolerate each other), and those who didn't just didn't because they didn't approve of the people in Umbra's group, most of whom were genuinely evil and terrible even though she wasn't. ANYWAY nostalgia over moving on

Fray was... an adventure. She was pretty much always my self-insert in things while I was growing up, though her name and design changed a lot. She started becoming more of a solid character around the time where I kept throwing her into Mario fanfictions that weren't even remotely Mario-related (but I kept saying they were so I could post them on FF.net because I didn't know there were any other sites you could post writing on). She was either super angsty or roflwafflez-esque random with little room in-between. Dicro was her obligatory dark and mysterious love interest who was kind of controlling and a creep and really not a good love interest at all?? And instead of it being a consensual thing, Dicro got ownership of Fray's soul by tricking her.

As I developed their story, the two characters changed really, really dramatically and so did their character dynamic. Now Fray's a bubbly kid who's struggling to keep morale up while everyone is going through hell, and Dicro is a nice and somewhat nervous guy who has a lot of moral conflicts and dies a lot. They both get along really well, would do pretty much anything for each other, and are essentially siblings.

(whoops i should've posted the question and answered later because i started this post like 2 1/2 hours ago)

Q48. Do you have any OCs who have radically changed from their original concept?

Adie might be #1 here, originally she was like a 13 year old runaway princess. She had like a magic crow named DJ and she had to escape from the dude trying to murder her. Then after that she became same age and all, similar place and all that, but she was cocky and had the worst outfit. The story would end up making her the queen after her sister had a spell broken that was cast on her by the guy trying to kill her, it was weird and sucked. I guess it was a similar concept but now instead of outspoken she's more reserved and thoughtful and a huge bookworm. She isn't anime show style fighter anymore and does it mostly for self defense alone instead of looking for fights. Did I mention her name used to be Raven?

Iskalon also has come pretty far though. He originally was just some weird demon trying to take Adie's soul. Now he's a slutty demon who wants to fuck everything, quite a change who has a certain respect for Adie. His design also changed drastically, from this to his current stage.

Leysa also used to be a cocky child who was a redhead, change in appearance mostly there. She really didn't have a personality from the beginning

Griffin has also changed a lot. He used to be like Crona from Soul Eater, he was timid and didn't know much about himself and was frightened. Now he is very outgoing and thoughtful instead of a scared child who needed the great and powerful Raven to teach him magic and shit.

Willa would probably be #2 on the list really. She was a dead twin revived as a robot to help her sister live because magic, inspried heavily from chobits. Then she turned into an angsty fucker with a dark side she couldn't control meant for bloodlust and things. During that time the idea in her backstory was kinda the same, except her 'dark side' came from the dark magic that she shared the body with basically. And now she's just a happy little robot living life, kinda.

pictures because it was a dark time with hilarious drawings

Q48. Do you have any OCs who have radically changed from their original concept?

yep definitely

Jinx used to be kind, caring, and way overdramatic, now that I think about it...she was going to be super mysterious and shy. She's changed a lot. For the better, I think? Clara was going to be a calm and wise character, but she's not calm anymore lol. Lionel was going to be a completely insane villian in the story I was writing, but I started to like him and he's part of the good guys now! Melody was going to be super shy and clumsy, but I ended up making her strong and independent instead. She's still shy though.

Q48. Do you have any OCs who have radically changed from their original concept?

Darian used to be my persona's dead boyfriend. That's how even my friends to this day remember him, the Gal's dead boyfriend. His concept was being my persona's uber cool boyfriend with purple hair that got killed at when they were trapped at some hotel run by a secret cult. He then followed her around as a ghost, and later when she got sucked into some altered version of fantasy heaven she got to be with him in person again. They then got the ability to control light and darkness with each being the opposite, and he was an all around badass that protected the Gal from danger but couldn't go out in the light of heaven due to his affinity for darkness. Now he's very much alive, naturally has the ability to control darkness even without the Gal, and it specifically her not-boyfriend. XD His personality has also gone from sharply sarcastic and snippy to a little more mellowed out around the Gal and overall less of an asshole, although he still calls himself one.

Neoka was developed initially to be Nakeeta's older brother who was a vigilante of sorts. He was very upbeat, cheeky, and rather over the top about everything. His sister was (and still is) a rich pop star, and his main goal was to protect his sister from their greedy relative (I forget what kind of relative, maybe aunt or stepmother or something doofy like that) who hired people to assassinate her so they could lawyer their way to her money. Neoka was a very minor character until I revived and revamped him for my main story series. He ended up being a rather insane and violent villain in a group of five agents serving the fake goddess of death. He also gained his ability to clone himself and morph into other people and utilize their skills and memories (WHICH IS TOTALLY OP AND I DON'T CARE OH HO HO HO HO). Neoka basically had a habit of talking to himself, either figuratively or literally to his other clones, and he was just... awful. I mean, he was a great and fun character, but such a horrible person. And that incarnation of him still exists in the main story, but NOW that part of him has become a split personality of his true self, which is how he is today. Angsty, still over the top, and wanting to make up for all the crap he did before. I incorporated some of his original traits back in and mellowed his personality out a bunch, and he's actually a very good person now, and he's gone from uber minor to me writing about him more than my own personas. XD Oh, and Darian and Neoka HAAAAAAAAATE each other because they both like the Gal. Yes, I have no shame about having my two hot guys fight over my persona. NO SHAME

Jake started off with the concept of an entirely different character now. He was initially written to be a traitor in the Enlightened that tries to kill Dmitri and Rahmue for uncovering his support of the resistence, and since he needed to be a traitor I had to write about him interacting with the other characters so it would be a harder hit in the plot. AND I FELL IN LOVE WITH HIM DANGIT so I ended up not being able to kill him, so I took all his development and made him a loyal member while I took the role of the traitor and assigned it to someone else. ^^;

Rick also had a once-a-hero-now-a-villain thing, but he remains a bad guy. Was the cool mysterious dude that needed to protect this cutesy girl while she was trying to save the world but he had some mysterious past with the bad guys and ended up facing his inner demons and blah blah blah... He has a similar concept, but his past with the bad guys is much more direct, which is what causes him to still fulfill his good guy role and then TOTALLY STAB THEM IN THE BACK or should I say totally stab Adrian in the stomach. Sharen has a similar good guy to bad guy back to good guy thing, except now she's just good guy to bad guy. She was meant to be friends with this fellow here but then gets brainwashed into fighting against him, but ends up being freed and then they're friends again. Nope. She's a bad girl now. She's also way more... uh, suggestive than she was when I made her in like 4th grade. XD

Speaking of "this fellow here" OH GOSH I've shackled him to a development roller coaster than I can only hope is slowing down now. XD Used to be the twin brother of Mariena and actually have a first name. He was also a foul mouthed asshole. He later mellowed out and got a hairstyle change. Then he mellowed out and got a severely needed haircut. Then I totally flipped everything back again and he went to his original look again and was an asshole once more, but this time he didn't have a first name because his original name was STUPID and not even a real name where the setting had everyone with real names (except his cousin, who the heck names their child Sparkie? AND APPARENTLY SHE WAS THE NIECE OF THE GOVERNOR OF THEIR HOMESTATE WHICH I DIDN'T REALIZE WOULD MAKE HER RELATED TO ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER WHAT THE HECK I'M AN IDIOT OR A GENIUS MAYBE I DUNNO). Then he wasn't related to Mariena anymore. Then he became even more of an angsty asshole. Then he became less of an angsty asshole. Then my friend started calling him "Tim" and I did too. And now only a month later he finally has a legal name, because how the heck could he function in modern society and get a driver's license without a first name??? GUH So people can call him Luke, although that's still not his real name, just his legal one. I won't call him that though, it's mostly for his own world's use and for the benefit of other people that need to refer to him.

Uh... what else? Kara used to be a super flat character whose only purpose was to be Brandt's hot girlfriend that would distract him from doing important things by being her hot self. She still distracts him sometimes, but she's not a personality-less slut and is now a very attractive and smooth talking GTA working at her masters degree in Math. She's also an ex-cheerleader that is really embarassed about choosing that lifestyle just to fit in more and be noticed, as homage to her original concept when I thought she was just going to be incredibly minor throughout. But I suppose if you're dating the FREAKING PROTAGONIST you're bound to develop. XD

Erin's design has not changed one bit since I made her. But now she's gone from a seemingly shy cutesy girl that has a bit of a temper to full on remorseless assassin that disquises herself as a cutsey girl. And it's purposely made to be somewhat creepy for me because WHAT THE HECK she was a lot younger when I made her and now she's older and WEARING THE EXACT SAME OUTFIT and it makes me shiver a little bit.

And last but not least, my darling Volkmar started out as a kid stuck in juvi for being involved in murders that occured during the filming of his band's music videos. I don't think I've ever told anyone that before... and if I have I don't remember it. He had to be kept in a straight jacket at all times and was pretty insane, known to hear voices in his head. Apparently he was also brunette. I honestly do not remember EVER making him brunette at any point in time and have always remembered him being blond, but one day I look in my old files to check up on his old information and sure enough: "HAIR COLOR: BROWN" WAT.
At some point Volkmar became a lot less unhinged, and his hearing figurative voices in his head transformed into hearing voices of devils that wanted to eat his soul. He also changed from being pure human to half reptile demon SO HE CAN BE THE ANGSTIEST HALF HUMAN HALF DEMON IN AN ANGSTY BAND EVERRRRRRRRR~ But really, Volkmar's not all that much angsty anymore. He's a lot more squishy, but he's still kind of a jerk on the exterior. He also is German now. SPITZE LIEBCHEN~

alright folks i'm finally back in school and my schedule's pretty fucky so i'll probably be asking questions around this time from now on and i'll just type my own answers later in the day when i have time!

Q49. Do you have any OCs who have had their designs radically changed from when you first conceptualized them?

This question is specifically about how different your characters' designs are from when you first came up with them! Design changes that change within your story/game/RP/etc itself will be the focus of a different question! probably tomorrow's if I don't think of anything special for question 50

owlhari

Q49. Do you have any OCs who have had their designs radically changed from when you first conceptualized them?

Yep!

Brooke used to look a lot more pirate-y, with a sword and jewels and gold. But I wanted to make her design simpler. Claire originally wasn't a Lyna, but I didn't want to make her a human, because those are rare in her world. She also didn't have an apron, just the dress. Chev and Hystery's designs used to be more complicated, but I simplified them a lot. John Smith's outfit was going to be a lot more dark and evil-looking.
