#24. Dark Waters

The crisp night air filled Audun’s lungs as she calmly walked through the woods. The trail she was on was still plenty clear in the dark, so she just continued to follow it, knowing it would take her to her destination eventually. The trail slowly opened, and, in the distance, she heard the familiar sound of water. She followed the path to it’s clearing, and once free from the blanket of trees she found herself walking along the side of a lake. The water didn’t move too much, but the calming sound of small fish leaping from the water paired along with the sounds of insects and frogs to create a very soothing ambiance.

Most nights she’d walk past without a second thought, but tonight she actually brought herself to the edge of the water and looked out among the lake surface. It was so dark it almost looked like pavement. But the gentle turbulence of the water’s surface from soft winds and jumping fish gave it that speck of life it so desperately needed in the dark. She smiled softly, as she thought about how akin she was to this lake. Quiet in some ways and yet loud in others. Looking so calm on the outside but teeming with beautiful life and wonders on the inside. She was beginning to appreciate this lake more now despite having passed it so many times. Just as she was slowly appreciating herself more. She lightly placed her hand over her heart before she turned and continued along her path. She’d have to remember to appreciate it more often.
