About
Modern werewolves are dictated by sunlight, unlike their ancient counterparts. When in sunlight, they can maintain a human appearence, but once in darkness they have no choice but the change into a wolf.
When in shadow or moonlight, they only half shift, giving them the look of a humanoid wolf. Hence, the lore of humans turning into wolflike creature at full moon was born, due to the fact it was easier to see a werewolf running away than it is in dark moon.
Origins
These werewolves were born from a time travel experiment at the end of the BC era. It is believed they came from somewhere in Egypt, where ancient werewolves were most prevailant, as a way to control the population. Since then they have multipled, learned and intergrated into human society.
The time traveller in question is known to be Lukas Cogg. He made it his mission to find when werewolves first began, and discovered himself in the past with a werewolf friend of his. His future self told him what was to come, and he set about it.
From his shortly written account of his venture, he and his friend had gone back in time to around the end of the BC era. During the night, Lukas's werewolf friend bit a human, and from there more werewolves were created through biting.
These werewolves were sent out when the moon was weakest to hunt down ancient werewolves. If this was the plan or it was people taking advantage, it is not known.
The exact location and date are unknown, as well as the details.
Other
Darkness
Different types of darkness have different effects. A dark room, for example, will cause the werewolf to change almost all the way to wolf, but not all the way. A dark night with no moon, however, will absolutely cause them to change fully to wolf.
Artificial light
Light such as firelight and electric light do have an effect on shifting, though it's only minor. The werewolf will change to a humanoid wolf, more wolf than anything.
