About

Phoenix are, in simple terms, immortal bird people.

When they hatch, they are covered in a fine feathery down. As they grow, this developes into feathers, especially on their head, shoulders and arms. These feather positions stay into adulthood, moulting every year to be replaced by new feathers.

Phoenix age very slowly. When they die, it's either from extreme old age or from an illness or wound. They are then cremated and their soul egg retrieved. Eventually, it hatches into a new phoenix with the same soul.

Phoenix are not able to summon fire, but they can make illusions of it. They're favourite trick is to create images of fiery wings from their backs.

Ranks

To show one's rank, they put braids in their hair. The more braids, the higher the rank.

Most cities and regions have different styles, from a simple plait to complicated knots and patterns.

Other

Love Story

Phoenix are very social, even with their love lives. Commonly they are in at least one poly relationship. They tend to form big families of 10s, 20s, even more. Orientation doesn't matter to them; everyone is valid.

When they marry, they exchange small trinkets. These they tie in their hair.

Soul egg

Phoenix have something called a soul egg inside of them. It's a place where their soul resides, which protects them from normal causes of death. After death, this egg begins to form a new body inside of it, which eventually hatches into a new, young phoenix with the same soul. Ot takes a couple of years to regrow a soul egg, so young phoenix are vulnerable to actual death.

Some phoenix keep some memories of their previos life, whereas others do not.

On Abyssal and many of the worlds in the V Branch, the main religions are Solista and Lunista.
