A champion’s battle: Sam vs. Blue || Chapter 30

After resting up for a bit, and fully healing up and reviving my team, I confidently marched into the next room… Where the last Elite Four member waited for me.

“Ah, there you are! I’ve heard about you, Sam. I lead the Elite Four. You can call me Lance the dragon trainer. You know that dragons are mythical Pokémon. They’re hard to catch and raise, but their powers are superior. They’re virtually indestructible. There’s no being clever with them… Well, are you ready to lose? Your league challenge ends with me, Sam!!”

“…Well see about that.”

BATTLE… BEGIN!!

Lance: “Go, Gyarados!”

Dragon types? Man, and I thought ghost types were scary. Wait a minute, Gyarados isn’t a dragon type…

Sam: “Let’s go, Pikachu! Use Thunderbolt!!”

Lance: “Use Dragon Rage!”

Sam: “Again, use Thunderbolt!”

Pikachu was quickly able to land the attack before Gyarados could, knocking it out.

Lance: “Go, Dragonair! Use Outrage!”

Dragonair’s attack did a ton of damage, quickly knocking out Pikachu.

Sam: “Let’s go, Venusaur! Use Body Slam!”

Venusaur attacked, Dragonair immediately attacking with Outrage again, in an uncontrollable manner, doing a ton of damage.

Sam: “Again, use Body Slam!!”

Once again Dragonair used Outrage again, knocking out Venusaur. Dragonair finally stopped rampaging though, suddenly becoming confused.

Sam: “Alright, you’ve got this, Charizard! Use Flamethrower!!”

Charizard’s attack did a bunch of damage, knocking out Dragonair.

Lance: “Let’s go, Aerodactyl! Use AncientPower!”

Sam: “Use Fire Blast!”

Both attacks did a lot of damage, but Aerodactyl’s attack did way more.

Sam: “Quick Charizard, return! Go, Blastoise!”

Lance: “Use AncientPower!!”

Sam: “Use Hydro Pump!!”

Before Aerodactyl could even do anything else, it was knocked out.

Lance: “Go, Dragonair! Use Hyper Beam!!”

Sam: “Quick Blastoise, return! Go Wigglytuff!”

Wigglytuff took the Hyper Beam attack instead, doing so much damage that it knocked her out in one hit.

Sam: “Oh man, alright… Let’s go, Charizard! Use Flamethrower!”

Dragonair took the attack, looking too tired from the Hyper Beam attack to move this turn.

Sam: “Now use Dig!”

The next turn, Charizard immediately attacked Dragonair, doing a decent amount of damage.

Lance: “Use Outrage!!”

Immediately then Dragonair’s attack knocked out Charizard. Oh man…

Sam: “Hang in there, Nidoking! Use Earthquake!!”

Dragonair’s Outrage hit Nidoking, doing a lot of damage, but luckily Nidoking’s attack knocked it out before it could do any more damage.

Lance: “Go, Dragonite! Use Hyper Beam!!”

Dragonite’s attack quickly then knocked out Nidoking. Oh man… I’m counting on you now, Blastoise…

Sam: “Blastoise, it’s all up to you now! Use Ice Beam!”

Luckily Dragonite was resting from using Hyper Beam, unable to attack this turn.

Blastoise: “Now use Ice Beam again!”

Lance: “Use Outrage!!”

Oh no, not again… Blastoise took the attack head on… Luckily managing to survive it. Thank goodness…

Sam: “Quick Blastoise! Use Blizzard!!”

Blastoise attacked before Dragonite could… Knocking it out.

Whoa, I… I did it. I… I really just did it. I BEAT THE ELITE FOUR!! YEAH!!

“Whoa, you really are a Pokémon master….” Lance says, taking a deep breath as he smiled. “I still can’t believe my dragons lost to you, Sam… You are now the Pokémon League champion!”

YES!!

“…Or, you would have been, but you have one more challenge left.”

…Wait. What?

“There is still one more trainer left to face! His name is… Blue.”

Wait a minute… Did I just hear him correctly? No, that can’t be true… I-it’s gotta be a coincidence, right? Maybe it’s another person who just so happened to be named Blue?

“He beat the Elite Four before you. He is the real Pokémon League champion. He’s actually around the same age as you… It’d be a funny coincidence if you two knew each other, huh?” Lance says, chuckling. “Anyways, he’s in the next room. Good luck with your battle, Sam!”

“Uh, yeah… Thanks, Lance.” I hurriedly ran into the next hallway, sitting down on the ground as I healed up my Pokémon. Oh man, this isn’t a coincidence… Blue was really able to beat the Elite Four before me?! He really is always ahead of me…

I felt a mix of a million different emotions… Anger, shock, disbelief, nervousness… I honestly had no idea how to feel about this, but one things for sure… I’ve gotten this far now, and I am NOT going to let Blue take this away from me when I’ve gotten so close.

“Pika…?” Pikachu looked up at me with a bit of a concerned expression, as I gently patted him on the head. “I’m fine, Pikachu. Don’t worry…” I stood back up, looking towards the next door. “Let’s go.”

I walked down the hallway, into the last room… Where Blue was standing there, almost as if he was waiting for me.

“Hey, Sam! I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I’m actually happy to see you!” Blue says, smirking.

“When the heck did you get here, Blue?!” I quickly snapped at him.

“Just a few minutes ago, actually… Hey, I’m just glad you didn’t keep me waiting too long!” Blue says, chuckling. “Man, relax already, you look so tense! Nah but for real, I was looking forward to seeing you here, Sam. I’m glad you’re my rival, you know? My rival should be strong to keep me sharp. While working on my Pokédex, I looked all over for Pokémon. Not only that, I assembled teams that should beat any Pokémon type. And now… I’m the Pokémon League champion! Sam, you know what that means? I’ll tell you…” Blue smirked, holding up a Poke ball. “I am the most powerful trainer in the world!!”

“…We’ll see about that.”

BATTLE… BEGIN!!

Blue: “Go, Pidgeot!!”

Sam: “Let’s go, Nidoking! You’ve got this!!

This is it… The most important battle of my life. I can’t screw this up. Not now.

Blue: “Hey, aren’t these two both our first Pokémon we ever caught? What a weird coincidence! I still remember when he was just a Nidoran and ran away from his first battle with me!”

Sam: “Yeah? Me too, but Nidoking’s not the same Pokémon anymore… Nidoking, show em how strong you’ve gotten! Use Rock Slide!!”

Blue: “Dodge it and use Aerial Ace!!”

Pidgeot smoothly dodged the attack, attacking as Nidoking took the attack head on.

Sam: “Now use Strength!”

Blue: “Again, use Aerial Ace!”

Sam: “Use Horn Drill!!”

Nidoking attacked, but Pidgeot was able to dodge the attack.

Blue: “Now use Whirlwind!”

Pidgeot used his attack, Nidoking suddenly returning back to his Poke ball… As Wigglytuff popped out onto the battlefield.

Sam: “Wigglytuff, you’ve got this… Use Tri Attack!!”

Blue: “Use Aerial Ace!!”

Both attacks did a decent amount of damage to one another, Wigglytuff’s attack paralyzing Pidgeot.

Blue: “Use Aerial Ace!”

Pidgeot tried to attack… But froze up from the paralysis.

Sam: “Nows your chance, Wigglytuff… Use Psychic!!”

Wigglytuff quickly attacked… Knocking out Pidgeot.

Blue: “Let’s go, Gyarados! Use Thrash!!”

Gyarados attacked, thrashing about wildly, Wigglytuff now low on health…

Sam: “Hang it there, Wigglytuff… Use Tri Attack!”

Wigglytuff attacked, but Gyarados was still thrashing around, quickly knocking Wigglytuff out.

Sam: “You’ve got this, Blastoise! Use Ice Beam!”

Gyarados kept thrashing around, doing a decent amount of damage to Blastoise. Blastoise took the attack like a champ, Gyarados stopping and becoming confused as Blastoise attacked.

Blue: “Gyarados, return! Come on out, Alakazam!”

Oh, no. Alakazam was always one of his scariest Pokémon…

Blue: “Alakazam, use Reflect!”

Sam: “Use Ice Beam, Blastoise!”

Blue: “Now use Future Sight!”

Sam: “Use Hydro Pump!!”

Blue: “Now, use Recover!”

And with that, Alakazam quickly healed up a bit. Of course…

Sam: “Use Blizzard!!”

Blue: “Use Psychic, Alakazam!”

Alakazam’s Psychic attack did a bunch of damage, the Future Sight quickly then landing… Knocking out Blastoise.

Sam: “Go, Nidoking! Use Horn Drill, quickly!!”

Blue: “Use Future Sight!!”

Luckily Nidoking was quickly able to land his attack, knocking out Alakazam.

Blue: “Let’s go, Arcainine! Use Extremespeed!!“

Nidoking was already pretty weak, quickly getting knocked out by Arcainine’s attack.

Sam: “Let’s go, Charizard! Use Dig!!”

Charizard quickly dug under, attacking Arcainine the next turn, the Future Sight also landing and hitting him.

Blue: “Use Extremespeed!”

Sam: “Dodge it and use Fire Blast!”

Blue: “Use Flamethrower!!”

Sam: “You use Flamethrower as well!!”

Both Flamethrower attacks collided with one another, creating a burst of flames that slightly scorched the floors.

Sam: “Use Dig!!”

Blue: “Quick, use Extremespeed!!”

Arcainine quickly landed a powerful attack, and luckily Charizard was still able to dig under… Then he quickly popped out and attacked, knocking out Arcainine.

Blue: “Go, Rhydon! Use Rock Tomb!!”

Rhydon’s attack quickly landed, knocking out Charizard.

Sam: “Go, Venusaur! Use Mega Drain!!”

Blue: “Use Take Down!!”

The combined force of both Venusaur’s attack, and Rhydon’s attack’s recoil, quickly knocked it out. Just one Pokémon left…

Blue: “Alright… You’ve got this, Umbreon! Use Hyper Beam!!”

Umbreon’s attack landed a critical hit, doing a ton of damage… As it knocked out Venusaur. Now I only have one Pokémon left too…

Sam: “It’s all up to you now, Pikachu! I believe in you, buddy!”

Blue: “Heh, look at this, another weird coincidence. The last battle comes down to both our starters… This battle really feels like a throwback to the past, huh?”

Sam: “Heh, yeah… I already know who’s gonna win this battle, though… Pikachu, use Thunderbolt!!”

Blue: “Quick Umbreon, dodge it!”

Umbreon quickly then dodged the attack.

Sam: “Use Slam!!”

Blue: “Use Faint Attack, Umbreon!”

Sam: “Use Thunderbolt!”

Blue: “Block it with Dark Pulse!!”

Both attacks collided with one another, creating a small explosion.

Blue: “Use Shadow Ball!”

Sam: “Deflect it with Slam!!”

Pikachu managed to deflect Umbreon’s attack with his tail, throwing it right back at Umbreon, even managing to do a bit of damage.

Blue: “Alright, no more messing around… Umbreon, use Hyper Beam!!”

Sam: “USE THUNDER!!”

Both Pokémon unleashed their most powerful attacks on one another, creating a big explosion that filled the battlefield with smoke… And when the smoke finally cleared, one of the Pokémon was knocked out…

…It was Umbreon.

…I can’t believe it. I… I’ve really won.

“NO!! This can’t be!!” Blue groaned, weakly falling to the floor, as he returned Umbreon back to his ball. “Beaten at my best… After all that hard work… This isn’t fair…” Blue sighed, standing back up. “Dang it! I guess you’re the new Pokémon League Champion now… As much as I hate to admit it…”

“SAM!!” I suddenly heard a familiar voice shouting my name. I turned around to then see Professor Oak running up to us.

“Professor Oak?! Did you beat the Elite Four too?!” I asked. “Don’t tell me I gotta fight you now too…”

“No, not at all! I just wanted to congratulate you on beating the Elite Four!” Professor Oak says, smiling. “You really have grown up so much since you first left with Pikachu to work on the Pokédex…”

I looked down at Pikachu, who smiled warmly at me, as I smiled back. Professor Oak’s smile then faded away as he turned to Blue. “Blue… I’m disappointed in you.” He says sternly. “I originally decided to come over here when I heard you’d beaten the Elite Four… But when I got here, you had already lost! Do you understand why you’ve lost? You have forgotten to treat your Pokémon with love and trust… Without them, you will never become a champion again!”

“…Wha…” Blue had an almost horrified look for his face, at a loss for words, as Professor Oak looked back over to me. “Sam… You understand that your victory was not just your own doing… The bond you share with your Pokémon is marvelous.”

Pikachu quickly then hopped into my arms, as I tightly hugged him back. “Thanks, Pikachu… You really are the best.”

I know Professor Oak was right… This really was the best team I could ask for. I couldn’t even describe how happy I felt in this moment. Everything that I’ve wanted my whole life, everything that I’ve worked for during this entire journey. There was nothing more that I wanted that to finally achieve my life goal, and now… I’ve finally got it.

I’m the champion of the Kanto region… Yeah, one things for sure…

…THIS IS THE BEST DAY OF MY LIFE!! WOOO!!
