Clothing Style

Terry dresses in a relatively simple and casual style most of the time, usually sticking to a T-shirt and jeans with running shoes, although he'll adjust his outfit for the weather of course. He's also often seen wearing athletic wear or his soccer uniform when practicing or just getting in some regular exercise. His style is rather plain and he never tries anything overly dramatic or too far out of his comfort zone, and he gravitates toward cooler colors that are more calm looking than bold or vibrant.

While training on Kiami, he wears outfits that fit in with the culture. (Specific designs TBD)

Personality

First impressions of Terry tend to be that he's a friendly and easy-going young man with a lot of heart but can be a touch shy at times. He's always kind and courteous toward anyone he meets, and even with people he dislikes or can't get along with he tends to simply avoid them or just grin and bear their company. Terry usually takes some time before he warms up and feels comfortable around new people, and he's more energetic and appears rather outgoing when around his friends whom he's already familiar with. He's a good friend to talk with since he's a good listener and always tries to be supportive of those he bonds with, and he can usually keep a level head and will always try to be honest (even if he has to be very gently honest about something negative). He dislikes upsetting or disappointing others, so he can be a bit of a passive pushover around people that take control of the situation. Although he's learned to stay collected and strong on the outside, as a child he'd be much more timid and sensitive, and he'd often remove himself from the situation and/or cry if he felt too overwhelmed by a dominant person that wasn't delicate enough with their words or actions.

Although he seems totally confident on the soccer field, in terms of other things Terry can be more uncertain, especially with more serious topics or decisions. He tends to second guess himself and always seems to underestimate his abilities excluding his sports performance. In others topic he can be more sensitive and hesitant, and he gets hung up on his mistakes easily. He takes most criticisms to heart, and although he can recognize constructive criticism and work to improve, he usually stresses himself out about trying to fix his mistakes and not disappoint anyone again. Terry is most successful when he has some voice of support to ease his worries, and although he doesn't need to be babied or constantly fed reassurance, a little bit of positivity can go a long way with him. He works much better and feels stronger when he has the sense that someone believes in him, and he'll always put his best effort into whatever he does, especially if it involves helping others or simply doing the right thing.

Terry enjoys the simple things in life, and he doesn't need anything too extravagant or complicated to make him happy. He enjoys the company of his friends and family, time outdoors for either exercising or just enjoying nature, and he's very fond of animals in general. He has a soft spot for dogs especially, and he seems to have a natural affinity for them at times. He has a very healthy curiosity and enjoys learning and seeing new things. However, he can also let his curiosity overshadow his judgment at times, and he can get a bit inattentive when he's focused on something new or unknown. Terry tends to follow his instincts, whether it might be a good idea or just lead him to trouble, but he sometimes has a hard time convincing himself not to sate his curiosity if the mystery is too tempting not to follow. He will be more cautious though if someone is with him though, since he wouldn't want to put anyone else at risk just for his own sake.

Backstory

Terry isn't entirely sure about the details of his infancy, but he was raised by his single father, Liam, in Philadelphia. His father was a police officer, and he never explained Terry's birth very clearly, although it's obvious that he's not entirely sure what happened either. As far as Terry knows, Liam found his mother in an alley in a terrible state and he was born during that encounter when Liam tried to help her get to a hospital. Terry never really questioned it at first since he didn't know any better, but as he grew up he had many more unanswered questions, especially regarding his father technically adopting him, yet there being biological proof that Liam is his actual father.

Despite his mysterious birth, he was raised by Liam after his mother disappeared that same night, and he had a relatively happy childhood with Liam's sister helping to take care of him while his father was at work. At some point during his pre-teen years, the family was approached by De Jack Zilvas with an invitation for Terry to attend a private school for rifters. It was at this point where Liam tried to better explain Terry's mother, although he didn't have all the answers still. The conclusion they came to with Jack's added information was that Terry's mother was of an Elemental race called the Darclytes, and Terry's birth was more or less magical in nature. During her encounter with Liam, she combined her rifting with Liam's essence to create an Elemental child with a mortal body, although the act drained all of her rifting and caused her to dissipate.

The two agreed to move to this rifter community in Nebraska to get more answers, and Terry attended the rifter school while his father transferred to the police force of the nearby city. After some time, Terry noticed his father was getting to know a woman, Jasmine, whose daughters were also at the private school, and he was eventually introduced to her when the two started dating. Terry was glad to see his father happy with someone, especially when both started talking of potentially marrying and joining their families, since Terry had always wondered about having a mother-figure aside from his aunt. However, Jasmine's daughters from her previous marriage, Tami and Tara, weren't too welcoming of Terry or his father, and once they learned he was going to the same school they started picking on him, Tami especially. Being rather emotionally fragile, Terry crumpled under their treatment and started to withdraw from the world. It took some time before Tara made the first move to warm up to Terry and start treating him better, and she eventually convinced her sister to give him a chance as well. The three eventually reconciled, and after some time their parents did marry and they've all lived together ever since.

The three siblings have gone about their lives, making their way through school despite still not discovering their potential rifting capabilities. This changes when they pick up an injured dog from the streets and a sinister force soon follows.

Trivia:

  • Terry is something called a "Halflyte," which is simply a term to describe someone who is half-Darclyte. This an unheard of concept, since Darclytes no longer visit the Eternity and have no contact with any other races but their own and the Epsilon dragons (which I'm pretty sure no one has tried to breed with yet...).
  • He obviously doesn't know anything about his mother, but she was apparently the sister of the Darclyte queen.
    • This makes Terry a cousin to Darian and Damion, although only Damion is aware of this. He hasn’t chosen to mention it to anyone yet since it doesn’t seem relevant yet.
  • Terry’s original name when I started writing The Dancing Dragon was Tory, and his sister Tara’s name was Terri. But I changed his name to Terry and Terri to Tara after my sister quickly called me out on being a big stealing stealpants because I definitely got his name from one of her characters. XP I was in third grade, okay? I wasn’t all that creative yet.
  • During their time in the Hateulots community, Terry notices his father gets more and more disillusioned with his job as a police officer. He knows his father is the type of person who genuinely wants to do good and to help people and society as a whole however he can, but various events from both his work in Philadelphia and after transferring into a Nebraskan police force have stacked up enough for his father to feel like the system he’s in isn’t really doing as much as would’ve hoped.
    • Terry eventually asked De Jack if the school could use a resource officer, and they later discuss hiring him to work in the school as an officer instead. Initially the school administration wasn't entirely sure if they needed a normal officer at the school since most of the staff already there is trained to handle threats and would be more able to protect students by supernatural means. However, De Jack brought up the point that it would be useful to have someone working for the local police department also working with them so it would be easier to obscure any issues of trying to keep the rifting community a secret.
    • ”It would be nice to have someone in the know working here so it doesn’t become a big hassle with the local police every time they see something weird and magical happening, like fire shooting into the air or someone launching a piano into a street. You’d think that would be a less common problem, but oh you’d be wrong.” - De Jack
    • Terry is pleased to see more of his dad when he starts working at the school, especially since his work as a police officer was a big reason why they didn’t get to spend as much time with each other while Terry was growing up. It’s also a relief to him to see his dad actually feeling like his work is doing something helpful rather than feeling disillusioned with trying to reach arbitrary quotas or the like.
