Relationships within the pride are considered to be very sacred, as Wicasa, himself, has made it very apparent that family should be important, and is important to him. Because of this, the pride takes great strides to make sure mateships and courting are handled responsibly.

When a male and female find that they love each other, the male can 'propose' or ask the female if she wishes to be his mate. If she says yes, then they are betrothed to each other, and must confront the hataniki upon such a decision. Both must state that they love each other, and if the hataniki can see this is true, then the couple and hataniki can set up a date where the two would be united. Dates can be set up to a month away, but no farther. When the day arrives, all of the pride members participate in watching the couple become united as one under a hataniki and the fellowship of Wicasa, who is said to bless the couple so long as they have done things the right way. 

Mateships are, then, permanent unless special conditions are met, such as abuse or one mate just up and leaving the other. Most times, mates don't tend to find another and remain single if separated. (More information on such things can be found within the A17 prompt, Unspeakable)
