A Hunting Style

The hunting style of the Wikimak pride tends to vary depending on what animal they are chasing after.

Because the pride is rather small at the moment, the kwahu are required to have an insoniti come with them on any sort of hunting outing they go on. Because of this, the insoniti can also act as a kwahu if further assistance is needed. They will ultimately wander into the forest with the intent on bringing back prey. Squirrels and rabbits are easily chased and killed using a sort of herding technique. One lion will chase the squirrel or rabbit toward the other lions direction. Only the smart ones tend to move aside but otherwise they are often successful in an area such as that.

Ptarmigans and quail, when found, are ambushed. Since they tend to try and camouflage in their surroundings and lay on the forest floor, it is easy to pounce on them before they take off. However a lion is often kept within range of flight, as quail will often fly low if startled. If a bird is startled, the other lion will quickly run over, jump, and grab the bird within it's paws. A quick blow to the skull and they have dinner.

Black-tailed deer are a bit of a challenge, due to their intense senses of hearing and smell. They have to play the wind, making sure their scent cannot be blown toward a potential herd or small group of deer. Once a herd or group is spotted, one lion will stay within the brush while the other slowly stalks out, trying its best to stay slow and keep undetected. Once close enough, the lion will pounce upon the closest deer, digging it's claws into its flesh and trying to get it down. While the others run off, the other will run out from the brush and jump onto the deer, attempting to help take it down. Fawns are easily taken down by one lion and a sick or unhealthy deer is also easily downed. Healthier, adult deer can be challenge, so more than two lions is often needed to do so.

Elk are probably one of the hardest creatures to hunt. Because of their large build, more than three lions are needed. A group of five is usually a good number. The technique concerning hunting elk is similar to hunting black-tailed deer, but since it is a larger animal, two lions are often needed to sneak out toward the herd. Playing the wind is essential to capture an animal such as this. It is also advised to leave the males alone, since they have such large, intimidating antlers. If they are in the process of downing an elk and a male comes by, trying to protect the targeted elk, it is advised and encouraged to leave the kill go. For it is better to injure prey than get injured themselves, or worse.
