Second in command tends to be the mate of the reigning tominatoak. The current tominatoak is Alosaka, and, since he has a mate, Nokomis is technically second in command. If Alosaka did not have a mate, then a share of the power and decision-making would go to the oldest hataniki, since they are considered very wise.

But Nokomis is the current second in command, and as tominatoaka, she is in charge of many of the same things as the tominatoak is. Most of her time is used helping the tamatama and tolorolla ranks, since Alosaka seems to focus more on the kwahu and insoniti ranks. She assists the two ranks with various things, if she's not listening to various pride members that come up to her with ideas or criticism. When Alosaka leaves, she is in charge of the pride, although he doesn't leave often, if at all anymore.

Other duties include surveying the border with the tominatoak, to check up on various pride members, and to assist members in various tasks, specifically assisting ranks with very little members in them. So far, Nokomis is doing a lovely job and seems to enjoy the responsibility.
