it's him! the worst character in apotropeica!

a burst of fireworks in the economic history of apotropeica. nobody quite knows where he came from, and nobody dares to ask. mr. vveld appeared out of the blue one day, establishing a massive investment company in the midst of the haven. the next few years saw a startling boom in fogmere's economy, with countless businesses kickstarting, town projects being funded within a blink, and just like that, vveld's corporation declared bankruptcy. this mysterious figure was the center of public intrigue for years, but currently, he lays low, somewhat. nowadays, he works as a small business investor. he's not much more than the occasional figure that pops up in little restaurants, galleries, or anything, he helped get off the ground, idly chattering away with the owners.

you see, vveld, while he should have lost all his reputation after his company fell in the gutter, is still a force to be reckoned with in the world of trade. he knows his way around sketchy contracts, and acts as a tutor to those who don't. while ever intimidating, to his clients, he's an angel, but to big-name corporations, he's a menace. anybody with a fat salary dreads the day the man comes into their office with a handshake.

but if you ask anybody with inside knowledge of the city, his charity may just be a side gig. despite his gradual disappearance from the public eye, it may still do some good to keep watch of him. mr. vveld is seen in close cahoots with Estu Vuzhu, and seems to know his way around plenty dark matters no run-of-the-mill businessman is typically aware of. truth to be told, vveld is old, rivaling even the city in age. he has had plenty of time to collect knowledge on... well, nobody seems to know what. his history is entirely unknown to all but perhaps the mayor, who refuses to speak even a word on the man, either out of loyalty, or perhaps out of fear. practically anyone in closer personal contact with him is suspicious of him in some way, but despite his frankly unpleasant personality and suspicious dealings, it cannot be denied that vveld is useful.

and you would do better not to doubt that usefulness, if you know what's good for you.
